I guess it's all down to criteria. I like visiting many of the cities on that list, but I wouldn't want to live there. If weather was a criteria (which is a major one for me), it'd rule out Melbourne, Adelaide, Auckland and Vancouver straight away, yet I enjoy visiting all those cities.

Toronto and Calgary? Don't these people feel the cold?

Brisbane used to appear in these lists but doesn't rank as high any more.

Port Moresby being worse than Lagos... wow.

So cold temperatures = liveable? I would have thought this added to the cost of living and therefore did not equate to liveability.

Weather is just a part facter - FWIW Melbourne's climate is considered "Temperate".

The winners are based on “30 factors spread across five areas: stability, infrastructure, education health care and environment.”

No. 1 according to this metric: Melbourne, Australia — just as it was last year.

“Those that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density,” according to the report. “These can foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure.”

Given the cough weather in Sydney - I'll easily take MEL.

Actually - screw you all. LA looks good ðŸ

And this survey comes from the Economist's Intelligence unit?
Next time they should use their Common Sense unit.
Probably not enough journos for one of them these days.

I think POM quite often gets a bit of raw deal in some of these "liveability" reports. Yes they do have issues and yes it is littered and dirty, but often I get asked by POM locals why POM has such a bad reputation but they are often reading about my home town (Gold Coast) having random drive by shootings, random murders, bikie violence, disturbing drug culture with associated deaths etc etc etc. They fail to understand why the Gold Coast is seen as a tourist mecca, but POM classed as a dangerous hole. The murders in POM are usually tribal related, not random, and although they have carjacking problems, they're rarely violent. Admittedly, POM is far from a tourist friendly city but it's also far from an absolutely dangerous city and I don't believe for one minute, it ranks where these reports quite often place it. One has to be vigilant, but I don't have any overwhelming fear of walking around POM city (although some suburbs I definitely wouldn't walk around).

Well comparing to Toronto/Calgary/Vancouver, Melbourne is certainly warmer.

Did it stop appearing in the lists when I moved up here?

Give me Sydney any day of the week/month/year. No other city comes close.
