I guess this could be in Your Questions, Playground or, if all else failed, I could do a search!

Can anyone suggest a good restaurant in Melbourne for Friday night for an infrequent visitor?

Criteria are:

walkable from Crowne Plaza so I'd think CBD or Southbank. Maybe Docklands at a pinch. Going to the burbs the next night.

cuisine style is not important as long as its carnivorous. Seafood at a pinch. Ethnicity doesn't matter.

reasonably priced. I looked at Ezard which we like but don't want to pay in the $40's for mains. The Press Club maybe (which is virtually in the $40's)?

not too loud or super trendy (therefore probably not the sort if place Keith would like.  ) Emphasis on the food.

Many thanks.

Michael,

There is a very good Thai restaurant on the river adjacent to the Casino front doors. Out the doors turn right and then right again to the water front rather than going over the Spencer St bridge.

If you don't mind walking/tramming into the CBD, and don't mind Japanese, I would highly recommend Yu-U for a no-fuss, ambient, nice dinner.

Yu-U

It may be a little tricky to find, but the restaurant itself is very laid back, the food is great and the price is quite reasonable.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Define walkable? I have a lower threshold than most people and so to me that narrows it down a lot if you're starting at the Crowne Plaza (ie the casino side of Southbank). :p

If you're willing to take a short (not more than 10 mins) cab ride into Footscray, try Delizia Cucina.

V nice contemporary Italian food, great wine list. Reservations highly recommended.

Due to its Footscray location the prices are competitive with mains $25-30ish.

Don't worry, no rabies injections or anything of that sort required for venturing into Footscray - they don't bite. I think. ;)

Rockpool - Very good - click 'ere

Totally overrated IMVHO!

(even though I think that QF does have v good food relative to other airlines :))

Meat and Wine Co - I like! :D

A favourite of mine in the city area is Jamie O's Fifteen. Fantastic food, and great unpretentious service. The sommerliers are especially commendable. Reservations required.

I like Ezard's too, but being a poor student I'd only go there on special occasions. :p If you like fusion cusine but aren't willing to pay as much, there's a place called Verge on the corner of Flinders Lane and Spring St (near Parliament House) that does excellent contemporary European with a Japanese twist. There's also Taxi Dining Room at Fed Sq that does great Japanese-French fusion, and has a noice $90 degustation. Service at Taxi is a hit or miss however. But the ambience is nice and it's not too trendy I don't think. ;) Reservations required for both.

Another option is Giuseppe, Arnaldo & Sons at Crown. Gets really mixed reviews, however I've been there a few times now and the food + service has been lovely each time. Menu very carnivorous! Ambient noise level a little higher than average, which may or may not be a problem for you.

I'm more used to eating in the burbs I guess.

We should try one of the tasting menu places next time I'm in MEL. :)

I'm not too big on the places where the mains are > $40 unless you can honestly convince me that it is worth it. That's what probably turns me off a place like Rockpool, of which perhaps I'd only go to please someone ;) Admittedly, I find choosing a nice place to eat and stay in MEL enigmatic - they are either all "the same" or all very good - although <warning: slightly OT> I did just finish a stay at the new Hilton South Wharf - very nice, real character about the place, really takes OTP to the cleaners. I wanted to try Neuvo 37, which is the resident main restaurant there; they seem to angle towards a Spanish menu, but I didn't get to see, so perhaps another time......

If I had said swimmable it would be 3 metres, Keith! That's an inside joke that Keith can tell all about after another bottle of bolly!

Thanks all for great suggestions. I'll choose tomorrow and try and do a booking.

Interesting. The web site is almost identical to the Squires Loft website squiresloft.com.au (also good for a slab of cow)

Edit: Fascinating reading the two websites - must be some story behind this

And there is :(
I used to love squires loft, but the family had some sort of falling out so the company split in 2.
I know the manager at the grill room city and so thats where i go, but a friend did tell me that squires loft is not as good as it used to be. Maybe an off night, no idea.
Squires in goldie place had a better venue though.

Anyway if you like garlic, the mushrooms for entree are nice.

They also have lots of nice red wines :)

The Steak Bank if your in the south east of MEL is also a good place to visit.

Come on anat0l - get down to the Peoples Republic of Victoria and come enjoy some dead cow with me at Rockpool...

I'll shout the wine!
