Melbourne rated world's most liveable city

It didn't feel like the world's most live able city at 6:18 PM when I departed the international terminal tonight. Cold and wet.

Edit: ....and it doesn't feel like it now as we crawl down the Monash in the rain!

Obviously not...

If you could marry Melbourne up with some of Perth's weather it might not be too bad a place...

Actually, weather was a part of the assessment. Melbourne 'lost' points in 3 categories - weather, culture (!), and petty crime.

Where did it get points then? Affordability???

@serfty hopefully the inbound weather won't affect my Thursday flight home...

Maybe someone gave them bonus points for their self proclaimed being the capital of the universe for sport??? :)

Interesting in today's Sydney paper they bagged Melbourne being given the title. With a nice pic of Sydney Rd, Coburg thrown in for good measure!

Having lived in both for an equal amount of time, not being raised in either (so no loyalty) and looking at the criteria used I completely agree that Melb should rank above Sydney for sure.

Surprised about the petty crime comment.

It can be a little amusing being from elsewhere to see Melbourne and Sydney jostle constantly for who is the biggest and bestest...

It was a nice twist picking Canberra as the capital... Cept its so cold and boring, but apart from that it has allowed much banter without rewarding either cities ego....

Yep and it has to a massive reduction globally of people knowing that CBR is the nation's capital. There is no international airport so visitors to our capital have to make a special trip and it makes it harder that so many embassies are in CBR rather than a major population centre. But hey as long as it was done for proper thought through reasons rather than to offend one city's ego then that's great....

We go to Melbourne fairly regularly from Perth. What attracts us is the year round sports/entertainment schedule, the many great food offerings at restaurants and the shopping and of course some work.
Melbourne is badly let down by having no train from the airport and taxi drivers who drive while they keep talking on their mobile phones. Paying $50 plus for MrToads wild ride to the city is something the Minister in charge of cab drivers needs to fix.
If we could get that Minister to line up at the airport taxi rank he would move to clean that up quickly.
Overall we find Melbourne food prices so much lower than Perth.

If our inept politicians would just build the fast train from SYD to MEL via CBR. They could upgrade the airport at CBR to an international airport and thus give SYD a second international airport an hour from SYD. The fast train could be linked to MEL airport on its way to Southern Cross Station.
