I am thinking of spending Saturday 24 April 2010 and Sunday 25 April 2010 in Melbourne. I propose lunch for the Sunday. Venue to be decided.

Is anyone interested in attending? Somewhere not too expensive would be desirable but not a necessity. There will be some status runners (anat0l, Bundy Bear, samh004, serfty) down there already who may be interested. Any locals? Suggestions?

I have found some cheap return TT flights from SYD for $122 and accommodation at the Hilton on the Park for $99 using HPC great rate card but would need to book sooner rather later as availability is not likely to last.

I’d be OK with lunch perhaps, as my flight out isn’t till 7PM. Preferably not liquid lunch though as I’ll have to drive when I get back to BNE :p

I'll be at the ANZAC day footy match at the MCG - I may have a spare ticket ...
Is that Essendon-Collingwood? My golf partner is going to be there. A spare ticket would be fantastic. He is a Collingwood member and I would love to watch Essendon win.

What time is the match? Does it leave enough time for lunch and then MCG and then airport for evening TT flight?

Generally 2:30pm though 5:00pm - allow 3 hours to get to TT (60 minutes travel to T4, Check-in 10 mins, 8 min walk to QP, 60 minutes QP, 7 minute walk to T4, ready to board flight at T-35 minutes)

Hmmm.... Late flight back to SYD. There is a 6:55pm flight or an 8:00pm flight which is $10 more expensive. Could make the 6:55pm flight by leaving out the Qantas lounge.

Unless you are planning starting lunch at 1130 and finished by 1230, you will be cutting it fine to see the first bounce. Remember, outside of final series football, this is the biggest match of the year, over 100K screaming fans will be attending, therefore stretching public transport to the MAX as well as huge lines entering the G. Being early mostly assures you of seeing the first bounce - but I have been to big matches at the G and from the Hilton entrance to my seat was over an hour...

Also bear this in mind for your return to the airport - it's unlikely you will hail a cab, and even catching a tram will take quite a long time. I would be booking flights as late as possible if attending the game.

The Wine and Meat Company would be my suggestion for lunch, next to a tram track which will enable easy transition to a flinders street tram to take you to the MCG, menu caters for all levels of budget and has a good selection of meals.

If the wine and meat company is going to be the choice though, we need to book well in advance.

munitalP +1 for lunch if this gets off the ground (regardless of venue)

Mr!

I'd most likely be in SFO but i'd be there if my trip gets pushed back. :)

JohnK,

If I'm up to it then lunch sounds good for us.

We are staying the 24th and 25th at Hilton South Wharf. Unless you are actually going to the football I would suggest Hilton South Wharf rather than Hilton on the Park. HSW is much nicer and it is only a short walk to the Skybus from there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try and get to the Football for the first bounce but it is not the biggest priority. I may not even get to the football. Wait and see.

If we start lunch from 11:00am-11:30am and plan on being at lunch for 2-3 hours then it shouldn't really be an issue. See what response we get back in the next couple of days before booking anything.

It will be good to see you and Sue there if you are up to it.

Unfortunately price as always may overrule the Hilton South Wharf theory. Hilton on the Park is $99 while Hilton South Wharf is ~$144. To me that is a significant difference.

I will probably be at the G.

If not, I am a maybe.

Hmmm....Looking better. We have 3 "confirmed", 1 "probable", 1 "possible", 2 "maybes", a "fat chance" and a "no chance".

Perhaps a hit and run trip on the Sunday with Tiger.

I'm also a maybe for lunch with permission from SWMBO. A day trip will give me an extra 20 SC, which would be good. Only need another 25 SC to be SG on my return from NRT in May. Still trying to decide if I should bother or not.

If i bother then a daytrip ADL-MEL won't go astray

Do it. ;)

I'l buy you the drink I owe you and you can recopricate :!:

Put me down as good for now.

We have no plans for the moment, but what to do in MEL on a Sunday especially given that:
  • Hire cars are extortionate
  • It's Sunday
  • There's a game on - i.e. get ready for insanity

Help me out here, people..... :-|

I'm not flying out until the next day, so timing is not a huge deal, although our next accommodation is Hilton MEL Airport.

As it is ANZAC day you could go to the dawn service then go back to bed for a while. ;)

I'm not sure if I'm prepared to do that. I will offer a minute silence at 11am (which is easy to do when one is still asleep in bed.)

Info only

General admission tickets are sold out.

Only AFL members and MCC members tickets available.
