Melbourne Airport First In Oz To Beat Pre-Covid International Numbers

The last few months have seen international carriers from home and abroad descend on Melbourne Airport in addition to strong domestic growth.

The good news is that airlines from all parts of the globe see opportunities in Australia, be they from North America, Europe, South America, Asia-Pacific and not just from the biggest and most lucrative market of all, China.

The international recovery has been so strong that Melbourne Airport (MEL) became the first Australian airport to exceed pre-pandemic levels of international capacity, driven by the thousands of seats added over the last few months.

It comes as Melbourne Airport says Bonjour to Aircalin for the first time in more than three years with the airline resuming services between Melbourne and Noumea.

A wide range of carriers really. Or perhaps just AirAsiaX moving their services from AVV to MEL.

Considering this:
This month more than 1.31 million seats will be available for international travellers to and from Melbourne Airport, which represents 101 per cent of the 1.29 million seats available in 2019.

That's just 20,000 seats to/from Melbourne - or 10,000 seats in each direction across the whole month. Or 26 flights on a 377 seat aircraft.

Now AirAsia X used to fly to AVV in 2019. So their 12 services a week into MEL now using a 377 seat aircraft mean about 19,000 seats a month in each direction ...
