MELB Dom - Intl transfer

Booked an award flight today from SYD to LHR return, the outbound leg is connecting to QF9 in MELB.

I just checked my itinerary and the wonderful CSA who found me a routing in J in peak season booked a QF domestic flight that arrives in Melb at 9.50. QF 9 departs at 10.55. The MCT for Melb is listed as 60 minutes, so technically OK but never having transferred there before I am not sure of the practicality.

On the upside I am a QF WP, flying J, booked by QF on a single itinerary. On the downside it is an award flight in early June, so what would happen if I miss QF9 due to a delay on the domestic flight? Y to LHR?

Transfer in MEL is fairly straightforward. The international terminal is sandwiched between the two main domestic terminals, and is a short 1-2 minute walk from the exit of the domestic terminal.

From there you'll head straight to the express path security and immigration. Shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes from the time you pull up at the terminal on your arriving flight.

You might get little lounge time.

If you miss the QF 9, Qantas will make other arrangements to get to London. You will fly in the same class of service (business). The only issue is which flight they'll put you on. According to their customer charter, they don't need to put you on another airline, only another Qantas service.

The only problems I could see is a delay in your arrival at MEL on the domestic leg or a delay in getting through immigration and customs when entering T2.
You don't even have to go outside to transfer between T1 and T2 at MEL and it is only a couple of minutes as noted by MEL_Traveller.
QF9 is often delayed as well which may play into your hands but if on time you might find that boarding has already commenced when you arrive at T2 which may deprive you of a Champers or two in the LoungeðŸ

If I were you I would seek an earlier flight from Sydney. This is too tight a connection (notwithstanding the comments about ease of transfer, which I agree with). A small delay and you will be stuffed at that time of night.

Take the stress away and seek an earlier flight, and enjoy some lounge time!

Thanks, I've now requested a flight that gives exactly 95 minutes to transfer. For some reason 1 June 2016 is extremely busy for flights into Melb...

I'm in a similar position as OP however my connection is 75mins. I'll be flying SYD-MEL then MEL-LAX. Arrive in MEL at 10:05 and connecting to QF94 departing 11:20. The flights are all under the same ticket.
Should i be concerned too? Would QF allow me to arrange an earlier domestic flight?

Well - if your SYD-MEL is 30 minutes delayed, your connection is going to be very very tight.

Will you make it? Probably. Stress level? Through the roof.
