MEL taxi scam

"But please Sir, I need to make an income says the Taxi Walla(h)"

I've no sympathy at all!

Understandable you have no sympathy because you would rather walk right?

Now wouldn’t that be a sight on the Gulla freeway inbound - some dude waltz g along in emergency lane with a couple suitcases - will I stop and pick him up?

Nah he said he would rather walk 👍

I would take a bus from terminal 4 to Broadmeadows, and then get a train home.
I would waste an additional hour but even that is better than taking a taxi in Melbourne.

Arriving on a flight to MEL airport just before midnight can be curious.

There can be quite many arriving DOM flights with no departing DOM and few departing INT flights. That's not something Uber or DiDi drivers want if going to the airport.

At first, at about 23:45, UberX wanted something like $140.00 to go to the CBD.

Even Didi wanted over $100.00:

This later dropped to about $46.00 just after midnight. But, of course, about 8 Didi drivers in a row accepted and then canceled that offer.

Here is the UberX line outside T2 just after midnight:

After giving up on Didi it was back to UberX that was then offering $52.00. I accepted that fare and had the PIN.

After the queue moved a fair bit, at about 00:30, the Uber marshal went down the queue to advise that no more Ubers were expected that night. And to get a Taxi instead.

So I went to the Taxi rank. No waiting. The metered fare came to just over $70.00.

OK, so $70.00 is no great bargain. But neither was UberX at about double that price about 45 minutes earlier.

If I arrived that late, staying a night at the Ibis Budget would be better than taking a taxi.

I would stay a night at the Ibis Budget and THEN go home. My home is in Melbourne.

Haha.

Even the $70.00 taxi fare was well worth it in the end.

And was cheaper (well at times) than Uber. No dynamic pricing.
