I apologise if this appears two or five times. Would you believe that there appear to be internet problems in the J lounge?? I'm shocked as well.
Well I had a bit of baggage for this QF business trip so after thinking about it for a while decided to bite the bullet and use some of the points Amex had given me for an upgrade. Instantly confirmed and to some extent instantly regretted as I remembered this was a 737-800, not the 767 with a nice little business cabin.
I decided to head off just before peak hour hit, all the better to enjoy the Dom J lounge which I have never visited before.
We got off to an awkward start as the cab driver happily turned off in the wrong direction. After a few minutes where he appeared determined to avoid any possible turnoff that could lead to Tulla I pointed out we weren't after YMMB and suggested we use the big road on which I was staying, which handily leads directly to the freeway.
Passing through Essendon, one of my favourite spots, with the Ansett simulator on the left and Essendon airport on the right, and big planes above. Tuned in to the Plane Finder app I was able to identify them as well; (eventually) eg VOZ 740 landing on 27.
NGCI offers me earlier flights…which I don't take because I don't know if I can keep the upgrade (help me here AFFers). When I get to speak to the desk, no, I can't have an earlier flight..huh? Also, assured at check-in that I couldn't check in two bags (despite my checking this in advance and indeed only upgrading for this reason), but luckily "computer said yes" and I was allowed.
Decor is pretty nice in J lounge, very crowded though and not impressed by the beer choice. As for the food, the "roasted Mediterranean vegetables" look boiled to me and overall pretty disappointing. I like the deckchairs that look out onto the QF concourse though and am enjoying the 767s landing. I'm very impressed with the realism of my YMML flight simulator! Carefully watching the DOSEL departures, thanks jb747 for the heads up.
More to come if you can take the excitement.
