QFd passengers arriving in MEL all week I am informed, including today, are facing delays of between one and two hours to retrieve arriving checked luggage from the carousel.
One assumes this is due to baggage handlers being off sick with a viral infection. Whether delays mitigate during domestic flights' quieter periods such as late at night, is unknown but since QF431 arrived at 1125 hours, passengers have been waiting 45 minutes with 'no appearance, Your Honour' remaining the case.
Given JQd is in a separate terminal in MEL, I am unaware if this is also a problem with its MEL-arriving flights.
QFd may be reluctant to, but it ought instruct staff make semi-regular announcements over the PA system in the baggage hall.
No wonder so many want to bring the kitchen sink on board.
There's no visibility as to when this problem will be solved, so it might be prudent to avoid checking in bags bound for MEL if at all feasible.
If parents with young children have to wait around for ages, they're the passengers to feel sorriest for.
