Hi experts,

My wife, who is qantas platinum is planning to travel QF29 on 18 Oct returning QF30 on 28 Oct. I have read elsewhere that Qantas has temporarily abandoned first on this route and that some pax are getting first seating for a business fare. What is the chance of a y+ getting a business seat without using points? How would I go about checking this before booking? Seat guru is showing mostly 9's at this stage. Thanks for your help.

Hi DKCR,

Chances are very good - current seat map for both those flights reveals that W is being sold in the downstairs J cabin - so Skybeds it should be!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Have you looked your booking up on www.checkmytrip.com ?

Once 'logged' into C/M/T and your booking is being displayed, look to the bottom of the "your flight selection" box for:
[+]view details click to see additional information including price, payment and flight special requests.

Click the "[+]view details" and the window will expand and you may see any seat pre-selection there. If you do see a seat number, click that/those and you may get a seat map.

If the Y+ row configuration is 2x3x2 then you have Skybeds.

I flew QF29 MEL-LHR about 4 weeks ago booked in Y+ and requested a points upgrade which didn't come through. I was allocated 26A, but at the airport the complete row 23 (bulkhead) was still free but blocked. I requested 23A, which had to be unblocked by a supervisor, and had 23A/B to myself.

On the return the upgrade did come through and I was alolocated 3A in the first cabin. While it was business service, it certainly seemed like a first service, in particular on the LHR-HKG sector, where the (LHR-based) crew were fantastic, and gave an almost first-service, no trolleys, full table service etc. On the LHG-MEL sector is was back to surly Australia-based crew who insisted in pushing a trolley through the first cabin, and bumping into everyone and everything in sight. Suppose I was spoiled on the first sector!

Having the first seats though was fantastic and made for a very comfortable journey.

Thanks for the advice. Will go ahead with booking now and advise outcome. Wish me luck!
