Does anyone have any thoughts about which is the better option between QF, J* or NZ in Economy on this route, please? Given we (my wife & I, both early 60's) will have to change flights somewhere along the line, we don't mind overnighting in Auckland if flying NZ is the better option.
It's a long time since we've flown anywhere in a 767 so I have no idea how the comfort level compares to that on the J* A330.

If I were you, I would definitely go for Air NZ on this route. NZ has a better seat pitch than Qantas and will allow you to stretch your legs in Auckland and reduce the time sitting down.

I haven't flown them but Hawaiian Airlines may offer cheap flights out of SYD that you could look at- it still requies a transit and similar fliying time to both QF and JQ from SYD but the price may be considerably different.

Thanks for the advice. I had checked Hawaiian Airlines but their fares were significantly higher than Qantas & Air NZ for the dates we want to travel. We like the sound of Air NZ for the reasons you mention...

IMO, NZ also have better food in Economy and a better AVOD system that works most of the time. ;) (unfortunately only available on the MEL-AKL sector on certain flights, AKL-HNL will be main screen entertainment)

A great selection of Kiwi wines in Economy too, and I found it more free flowing than on QF. :D

Enjoy the trip, much better than JQ unless you could manage to score a Starclass upgrade which can be hard to come by.
