I am travelling with kids, so am hoping to plan their sleep (if that is even possible! Just some wishful thinking). Anyway, can anyone tell me when the meal times might be from Sydney (departing at 2pm) to Los Angeles (arriving at 10ish am their time)?

2pm in Sydney is 9pm (yesterday) in LA, so your best bet is to let them watch cartoons or play games until the first meal arrives, and then as soon as it is cleared away get them to brush their teeth and get changed for sleep. By the time all this is done it should be dark outside and not too hard to convince them that it is bedtime.

How well this turns out may depend on their age and your previous success at getting them into a bedtime routine.

You will get 2 meals. The 1st is in the first 3 hours of the trip, & the 2nd is in the last 3 hours.

The "menu" they give you also has a little flight planner at the bottom of it that shows these times.

From memory the first meal in WHY is 2-3 hours after takeoff depending on where you are sitting and how quickly the crew get through the meal service.

I would have guessed meal served about 1hr 15 mins after take off, just guessing by how long IFE takes to come on and i am finished and cleared away by the end of the first movie. But i am nearly always front few rows so get service first mostly (except on 744's where one trolly starts at one side of the rear)

If you want early meal service, order a special meal. These are served before they start serving from the trolley.

But it still wont be collected till the rest of the plane is so you still need to wait around, sure i guess the parents can put the child tray on there tray table but not an ideal solution.

I've found IME that I've eaten the meal before the cart is blocking my way, so take a quick trip down to the galley and drop it off to them so I can whip the laptop back out :p

How fast do you scoff down that meal?

Aren't there usually two trolleys (even on a 737), which makes it hard to get to the back, let alone back to your seat? Even worse if you are in front row of Y....

My last flight it seemed to come out very early.... was a while before the trolleys started service:!:

Yes in 747 services i have seem them usually out and about with the special meals before the carts arrive.

but what would you select... i just prefer to chance it witht he standard meal anyway. I noticed BA added a couple of new special meal options as of June 09. None interesting to a normal eater though. Jain Veg... sounds scary !

For me, I'd either try the low fat or vegetarian meals.

Low fat may or may not be bland for some people. Also, if the vegetarian meal is > 30% potato or > 70% potato+peas, then that's just ridiculous.

Well, I thought I'd give a few a try to see what I was (or wasn't ) missing out on.

It seems I wasn't missing out on much..:!: in fact, I was missing out on my fav. whY meal; the rissoles time and time again! Oh well! To be sure, to be sure.

Which it is... it's pretty much a potato+pea curry w/ rice ;)

You know what that means...

...if you could eat the non-vegetarian meal - you might as well do so! Nutritionally, it would be better for you.

I don't think you can go wrong with low fat meals. I have been thinking about requesting a special for a while now but have stuck with the standard meal.

As for getting stuck with the tray table down after finishing the meal and waiting for the cabin crew to collect the meals I put the tray table away and either hold the tray in my hand or put the tray on the floor in front of me or on the tray table of the seat next to me if it is vacant. Usually one of the cabin crew collects the tray on the way past. I feel very uncomfortable with the tray table in front of me for too long if sitting in a bulkhead or exit row....

OTOH if I rotate my tray table 90 degrees I can still fit my Lenovo S10 on the tray to continue watching whatever TV episode / movie I had on

Previously requested the Low Fat Meal for a change from Spag Bol and
Rissoles on the evening flights. Had a look on the website today and now
there are only 3 options; Child, Diabetic or Vegetarian. For all other
special requests, call your Qantas Office. Looks like Qantas are cost cutting again?
