Hi. Mrs Batesy and I have a flight from SFO to HNL with AA next March in Coach class. I have only flown in First class with this airline. The flight is 5 hours and 40 minutes so we will need to eat. The flight details indicate "food for purchase".
Are we able to bring our own food onto the plane? Can we take it through security or do we have to buy it airside before we get on the plane. The food on offer for purchase from the AA website looks fairly ordinary.

Any help much appreciated.

You can take your own food into the aircraft. Lots of people do just this. You can take it through security so long as you do not take things that are specifically not permitted such as drinks. There are generally plenty of options to purchase food after security inside the terminals and some cynics would suggest the liquids bans are implemented partially to increase revenues for the air-side food and beverage businesses.

Many airside food and beverage providers will package their products "to go" for just this purpose.

Oh dear...does this mean I will have to purchase my own food when I travel on AA in Y from Iad to Lax, a flying time of 5.5 hours?:(:confused:

Just found my own answer!!:evil::rolleyes:

Yeah, BuyOnBoard is very poor. Avoid it at all costs. Do you really want to buy 'Trail mix' (think birdseed), chips, or candy bars?

Like others have said, you can bring anything oboard. I had a guy bring a large pizza onboard one of my AA flights last month...

Most airside places have ok (by US standards) food, but can be expensive. As others have said, they will normally package to go.

The TSA liquid bans shouldn't affect most foods, but the TSA can be very picky with certain gel/liquid like foods (think jelly, bolognaise sauce, pumpkin pie etc), but they are hard to predict as to how they'd handle most items - and on different days will allow certain items through, but block others.

As Mal says, if you want to eat on board, assume the "pay for food" options will either be inedible of unavailable. You should plan to eat before boarding (easily done airside) or plan to take your own food for the flight.

All the more reason to use KUP or YUP fares fpr AA domestic flights.

Mostly to avoid the stench of multiple fat food options being scoffed in whY - I mean a large pizza? Blimey!

The choice of food at SFO is pretty decent after security, so I'd just buy a decent sandwich when you get through.

Yep as most have said here, buy before you board.

We generally buy and bring to the airport in our hand-luggage. Have brought sandwitches, chips (packet not hot), bread & cheeze etc. Get your drinks onboard (from memory LAX-HNL you get two rounds of drink service - free soft drinks so I assume SFO-HNL will be similar).

Also, don't forget to bring your own headsets as well otherwise its $2 each to listen to the free inflight movie.

As I have always said since travelling within America with 'Full Service' airlines like AA - we get a great service in AUS !!!!
