MCY goes international with AirNZ service

Announced today, the airline said it will commence flights between Auckland and LA, San Francisco as well as other northern US cities during the winter season, using Sunshine Coast Airport as a pit-stop.

A poorly worded sentence in the press release. Does that mean they are flying a AKL-MCY-LAX? Or MCY-AKL-LAX? Will this mean a 777 to MCY? Or will the MCY-AKL flight be an A320 and just be timed to fit US connection flights in Auckland?

Aus BT on Twitter says
Air New Zealand is introducing new trans-Tasman flights between Maroochydore/Sunshine Coast and Auckland -- Sunshine Coast's first international services.
Air New Zealand will use Airbus A320 planes on the route, in an all-economy layout where the top offering is the extra-legroom, middle-seat-empty Works Deluxe.

But this is not the Sunshine coast's first International service.NZ did this with their Freedom Air subsidiary a few years ago but from memory was MCY-HLZ.

I wasen't expecting this. But good on AirNZ for doing it.

I'm sure residents of MCY will be very happy.

I must admit to feeling a bit of a prize idiot right now, when I first saw the title of the thread I thought to myself
'Why would Air NZ want to fly to Mackay.:oops::lol:
Cheers

It's only a seasonal offering and uses the Seats to Suit model.

Still, it will be interesting to see how this all goes.

Interesting inititative and worth trying for those seeking sunlight during the NZ winter.

It's actually because there are so many Kiwis living and working on the Sunshine Coast.A big market in family reunions and holidays.

Who only want to visit when it's cold in NZ. :-)

Good luck to them but I would have thought that OOL would have been a more obvious choice given the number of kiwis on the Gold Coast.

Don't Air NZ already have a service to/from OOL? In fact, both for AKL and CHC?

NZ already fly there, as do Virgin (so NZ code on DJ services) & Jetstar fly that route as well!

Pretty decent timings for the leisure traveller

Tuesday
NZ769 AKL ETD 1000 MCY ETA 1155
NZ768 MCY ETD 1255 AKL ETA 1810

Sunday
NZ769 AKL ETD 0630 MCY ETA 0825
NZ768 MCY ETD 0925 AKL ETA 1440

These flights open up another route to Tokyo flying a full service Airline.

Also saves the drive from the Sunshine Coast to OOL, and flying JQ to Narita, not a pretty thought.

Don't know about the SC's and points on the AKL-NRT-AKL sector, but VA code shares on the MCY/AKL sector.

Cheers,
Dee

It's 5491 miles each way, so if booked on the NZ code it would earn (each way):

Low-fat whY
1373/2746/4119 points (dependant on fare class) and 40 SCs

Full-fat whY
5491 points and 80 SCs

Premium whY
8237 points and 120 SCs

J
10982 points and 160 SCs

Yet still no service between CBR and NZ

The NZ CEO mentioned two new destinations for them in Australia, I think you just mentioned the other!

About time. I'm sure CBR is the only capital in the world without international air links. There's plenty of kiwis here, probably half of the people where I work seem to be from NZ.
