Hi my scheduled meeting may over run now and I might miss my full fare J flight from Cairns to Brisbane at 510pm on Friday. The next flight is at 7pm.

If I don't check in and just turn up, what's the chance I can possibly get on the later flight without having to pay a fare difference?

It could quite possibly considered as a no show, if you just turn up late? Then your up the proverbial creek without the paddle.

As you already know that you may well be late, I'd call and arrange alternatives. Seriously, Friday is 3 days away, be proactive!

How late? If it's a flex J fare you could probably call from the cab to change it. Risk is the later flight is also booked out so probably better to move to the later one now and then show up at the airport early if you can and request the fly forward on the earlier flight.

I would call and change the flight. If you get away early, you can always hang out in the QP in CNS.

Thanks. I've gone and booked a J fare on the 7pm flight. Both are fully refundable, except the 5pm flight was booked with the 50% status credits offer.

Provided you changed your existing booking which qualified for 50% SC's rather than create a new one, you should still get them.

My preference is to make the 5pm flight, so I have kept that.

Failing that, I can get on the 7pm flight, and the current J price is $619 - could quickly escalate in $$ over next few days - so I have locked that price in now.

I don't want to change the 5pm flight to 7pm, only to find on Friday afternoon that I can make the 5pm flight, and not officially being eligible to "fly ahead".

If the flights were not fully refundable (and not just credit), I would think twice about doubling up on seats

I have Virgin saver fare booked for 8pm, but I will likely cancel that and forfeit the $80 cancellation fee, as I prefer travelling Qantas now!

Qantas are pretty good with their flexible fares in that checking in doesn't actually change anything (don't ever checkin with a Virgin fare regardless of fare class. Once you're checked in, it's all over).

Years and years ago I was booked on the then TSV-ROK direct on VA which left in the early evening. VA WP at the time but no lounge. My meeting finished well early and I was at the airport 6 hours early with no option to get down to ROK early. I booked a flexi Qantas TSV-CNS on my phone, printed a boarding pass, walked into the QP (QF WP) and got on the phone and cancelled the flight. Refund processed within 48 hours.

Yes yes... I'm a terrible person, however I wasn't sitting outside for the whole afternoon!

In this case, I'd have missed the flight if it ended up that way and then either had them move me or just claim a refund and book a new ticket.
