I currently have a AA award ticket booked (using QF points), but need to book a separate QF flight to position for the start of that trip. My intention is to pay for a revenue QF flight and hope that the check-in agents are aware of QF's exception on interlining award/revenue mixed trips.

How long can the time between the revenue trip and award trip be for interlining? (e.g. can I fly on Saturday and have bags interlined for a Monday morning flight)

Thanks in advance for your advice / past experiences!

It may be helpful to provide a little more detail. QF will interline luggage if connecting from to OW, EK from seperate PNRs on the same day. Your example Sat-Mon will not be possible. In general you cannot bag drop for a trip on the following day.

Is the trip to the US? You would be collecting the bags on arrival at the first port of call in the US and proceed through Customs/Immigration with the bags. Most airports in the US would not accept bag drop for a flight for the next day.

Interlining would not be relevant in that situation, so maybe you are proposing something else?

Is that what you mean? Care to share that part of the itinerary to clarify?

Where are you connecting? What flight combination are we talking about?

I'd be absolutely gobsmacked if they let you do this even if it was a single PNR.

MEL-SYD (revenue)
SYD-LAX (on AA, booked using QF points)

The SYD-LAX leg is Monday morning - so I'm trying to work out whether I can fly in from MEL on Saturday/Sunday without having to drag my bags around.

Thanks - looks like my ideal plan isn't possible!

Sydney doesn't allow checked bags overnight so your plan won't work.

There are luggage lockers in the airport carpark so perhaps you could store them overnight in a locker (a large locker is $16 for 24 hours):

I think we all assumed you were connecting in the US.

No, definitely not. SYD won’t hold bags for that long.

You can store you luggage at SYD international, it will cost you but save moving your bags around. Probably won’t be worth it for that long though (I’ve used it for part day but not overnight). Not sure if it will be a thing post covid.

Edit - I’m talking about the manned office in the terminal, not the lockers.

Good strategy to arrive in SYD on the day prior to the SYD-LAX flight. Would Rydges at the International Terminal be of any use to you for an overnight stay? You will only be carting the luggage from across the road for departure.

You would still need to collect luggage at SYD Domestic on arrival, and get to Rydges.

There are not many airports that will hold luggage overnight if in transit. Certainly not in Oz , and none that I know of in the US.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll look into luggage storage at SYD (or just drag them with me, given I have to do it on the other side anyway...)

Is Rydges at SYD T1 still a covid quar(o) hotel though?
If you are able to book for the night before, ie, they have taken it off the quar(o) list, its the best hotel to do an overnighter prior to an international flight.
The Novotel Sydney international airport is a bit further out, taxi to get to and from, the Ibis budget Sydney Airport hotel, while cheap, also needs you to have a taxi to get to the SYD T1 terminal.
