MAS to (finally!) join OneWorld [February 1, not in December]

I did a search for April 2013 SYD-KUL-SYD and it is indeed a A333 for MH. How sad :( I will miss the 747 and 772. Anyone know if it will be the A333 refit or the old regional A333? :)

New A333. MH have stated that the new 330 is what they are using into Australia.

The 772's are looking tired, and have been for a while now. The seat pitch is great but everything else could do with a freshen up really.

ok thanks. Yeah I really enjoyed the 772 J seat pitch... Hopefully they will bring the A380 to SYD... Just don't prefer the A330's...

It's also a shame there is no F service. The 747 F was pretty good :)

Does anyone know if a Qantas Gold (OW Sapphire) will get the 50% extra baggage allowance that MH Enrich Gold members do when flying with MAS or is it just the standard 20kg in economy?

Also, would you get Qantas status credits and FF points as if it is a Qantas flight or does this depend on the type of fare you book?

I am sure that information will become available in due course

1) OneWorld doesn't give extra allowances per status, this only happens through partnerships currently, or because some airlines like CX and AA are very nice to any status pax. So if QF and MAS come to some sort of agreement, sure, but it'll only be based on that agreement, not because they're in OneWorld.

2) It'll depend on the fare type as always, and I'd expect super deep discount fares would be out, but you'll have to wait for the T&C/Earning Table to be updated for the full answer.



Additional baggage allowance is not a OneWorld benefit so I would have not expectation that MH would pass on their own FF baggage allowance to other alliance members.

It will depend on the actual fare type booked. If its deemed an eligible fare (based on the fare booking class) then it will earn both SC and points. But if its not deemed an eligible booking class then you won't earn anything.

I transfer from Westpac to Enrich and the flight availability and points cost has been great

A couple of weeks ago, at short notice, I booked SIN-KUL-MEL in business class on MH using all of 34,000 Enrich miles. 30,000 QFF points for economy not really an attractive alternative, especially given (lack of) availability (ie. class award availability was on Jetstar).

You raise an interesting question as to whether one should switch to Enrich, how do their earn rates compare with QFF?

Lot of their lower economy fares earn <1 pt/mile, but when they link up with QFF I imagine those earn rates will be reflected in QFF as well. With the 1000 pt minimum guarantee, for short haul QF flyers also QF is clearly superior (eg SYD-MEL 2.2 pts/mile). If never get status then Enrich seems good. If you would only get QF Silver (50%) bonus, Enrich again seems quite good (Enrich status - all tiers - get 25% bonus). Once getting into Gold/Platinum its' the status bonuses that make QFF better.

For Credit Card, Enrich seems better unless you can get a significant bonus (in the order of >0.5 pts per $) for QF pts.

Of course it all depends on what happens to redemption rates after moving into oneworld. But really there's only one direction it will, with increased demand, and that's up.

No, because Qantas is leaving OneWorld, according to a few members ;)

Well the way I read it, "is" means "might", but no real foundation to it, just a rumour started by some media fool. IMO the are not leaving Oneworld and miss out on all that connecting business.

Was hoping member of AFF Red Roo from QA would chime in but he's not been back to tell us the real story.

If MH don't change their burn rates, and charge similar rates for partner redemptions as they do for their own metal, after joining OneWorld then MH is going to be one hell of a good program to earn into!

I agree, have a SYD to HKG trip in April to book and know what J I'll be choosing as $3250 return, and collect points to boot. Then Mrs Lime & self get to see a bit of KL as well, its a win win.

I agree its great, and i do that too. But thats for people who are happy to go through KUL. If you are able to do that, then its a really good deal to anywhere.

But to complete the picture, its a 330, pay roughly $250 of tax for the one way and no points earn and penalties for changing etc.

Apart from the 330, that is the same as awards on just about any other FF program (in this part of the world) high taxes (QF same), no points earn (QF same) and penalties for changing (QF same). Only thing that differs is that you earn SC's on a JASA on QF (in my experience on JASAs and classic awards seem to net out to be the same number of pts .)
