morning folks, i'm getting married in april and my fiance wants to take my surname however we have tickets to europe for august in her maiden name.

are there any issues with legally changing her name here in aust ie: drivers licence and the likes, but keep her aussie passport (valid until 2018) in the maiden name until after we travel?

ordinarily i'd probably just change the passport at the same time and try speak to the airline but theyre avianca/thai award tickets and no doubt it'll be a nightmare contacting them.

There will be no problems at all. In fact some people continue to travel on the maiden name. I have a friend who has renewed her passport twice since she married, and it is still in her maiden name. (No idea why!!) So long as the tickets match the passport you will be fine.

When I got married last June tickets booked in h, my wife just travelled with her old passport until we got back. You have 12 months from date of marriage to change the name on passport for free.

I would keep everything the way it is (ie don't change name) until after you get back from the trip so her passport will match the air ticket, particularly as it's an AV LM award ticket & TG would not be able to re-issue the ticket if they had an issue with the passport not matching the eticket & you'd be referred back to AV to re-issue.

Some people go ahead & book in the ticket in their married name while passport is in the maiden name but just because you may have your marriage certificate with you doesn't mean it will be smooth sailing as some countries or airlines may not recognise that.

Others book domestic travel in their married name & change the frequent flyer number to match but when they travel overseas still book in their maiden name to match the passport however the frequent flyer number won't match the international booking so you can't get your preferred seating (if an elite ff) or be in the running for an op-up then you have to chase up your frequent flyer points after travel etc etc so you just end up creating problems for yourself.

Either change nothing or change everything.

all great points, appreciate the replies..

i guess after the wedding in April (will be overseas) she was hoping upon return in May and change the menial/admin stuff like licences/bank accounts etc and leave passport until October when we get back from Europe.

If you are spending any time in an Islamic country it mightbe a good idea to take a copy of your marriage certificate with you.

Although, with the perversity of these nations, that may not necessarily be accepted as a qualifying document.

All hotels, in at least the UAE, have in their Terms & Conditions the following clause
.

* Inaccordance with the local law, the hotel reserves the right to request legal proof of marriage at any time during your stay.

I have been wondering for a while now if our National Carrier has been missing out on Julia and Tim’s business.

I don’t suppose the Gold Card limits you to a specific Airline.
