Accumulation of points can be and often is addictive. Consensus of opinion seems to say that using points for upgrades is very efficient. Plus JASA bookings can be advantageous, if one knows how the process works. (Thanks to markis10 for his very informative post on that topic.) Also finding an award flight at a time when the costs are not discounted can be good value. But having taken all that into account, I recently decided to book a series of one-way flights using my FF points.
My husband and I are cruising up the Yangtze from Shanghai to Chongqing in October. I don’t fly at night so to get to Shanghai, I decided to travel from PER -> SIN on QF, SIN -> PVG on MU and HKG -> PER on CX. The cost of these flights as one way fares on “oneworld” airlines would have been $2125 which I thought was ridiculous. Using Singapore Airlines would have cost $1550 plus two nights at the CP Changi. But I was able to book all the flights using 80,000 FF points per traveller plus one night at CP Changi. All the flights are on the one booking which I think is good for the overnight connection at Singapore.
A good use of points for my particular needs, especially as we only had 162,000 points. My account was left with only 14 points.
What other advantages have frequent flyers found?
