If I see a backpack headed toward my face I reach up and make sure it doesnt connect. Half the time they dont even seem to realise that someone has hold of their bag....
Agree. Oblivious. It’s like that big hump on their back doesn’t exist. We try to take protective action too. We try make light of it by working out which one in advance will do the ‘swing into our or someone else’s head’ thing.

Why they don’t make people take off their backpacks when boarding planes beggars belief. People stop, wait, turn around to talk to their companions totally oblivious of the people they hit already seated.

After 24 years if frequent flying I am on autopilot with this as I wait sitting in my aisle seat.

My 'spidy senses' tingle when a PAX heading down the aisle is wearing a backpack; my arm goes up - preparing to defend when necessary.

If someone does so pivot and action is needed, I push back, hard enough to make the wearer aware but gently enough so as not to be offensive. That action generally results in an apologetic 'oops, sorry' with the backpack being disarmed.
