"ATLANTA (AP) - A passenger on a Delta jet was injured after his plane landed Tuesday when he opened the catering door and jumped to the tarmac below.

The man, whom a Delta spokeswoman declined to identify, leapt out of a door on the right side of the Boeing 767 jet at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to Transportation Security Administration spokesman Christopher White.

White said the man exited a door that is usually accessible for crew members in case of an emergency. The man fell about 20 feet to the ground."

He must have known enough about aircraft doors to know how to disarm the emergency chute before he jumped. Bright chap  .

Perhaps he thought it was the lav door and he was desperate for a leak?

Err, wasn't the crosscheck after arming the doors. (I am a bit hazy but I haven't heard anything baout crosschecks since I last flew Ansett - QF don't say crosscheck, SQ say something about putting the doors to automatic)

dont aircraft have some sort of "central locking" feature?

I know how he felt.. Some days at ATL I think about doing the same thing.

He was actually very lucky. If he made it to the ground in one piece, odds are he would have been run over by one of the 100 planes roaming around on the tarmac at the same time....

DJ arm the doors and crosscheck at the beginning of the flight, then disarm and crosscheck at the end of the flight.

In the case of the guy jumping, maybe he realised he had an urgent business meeting to go to or something. Being in the last row would mean that it would have taken some time to disembark.

Normally happens as they pull up to the gate, not while still taxiing.

In this case "Flight 1047, which had just arrived from Orlando, was at a gate on the E Concourse" so that's the doors would have probably been disarmed.

BTW. Isn't it unnerving to have flight crew talking about arming and disarming things on a plane?

Note the avatar.... old AN lingo. But they did it both on arming and disarming.

There was a recent snippet in The Age 'Diary' (a sort of gossip column) which claimed, and actually named the pax who reported it to them, that on a recent QF flight the FA made the announcement...

'Flight attendants, disarm doors and cross-dress'

...that may not be a word perfect recollection, but the cross-dress bit was certainly there...a Freudian slip perhaps?

Can't find it online, maybe archived.
