Exactly.

And remember it is a risk management thing. There is not a lot of illegal activity that takes place between Aus and NZ. CItizens are basically allowed to come and go as they please now. (you have to have an AUS or NZ passport to use smart gate)

I think you would be surprised just how much checking is done by immigration authorities behind the scenes.

Smartgate is also available to US Global Entry Program participants as well as UK ePassport holders at ADL and SYD. On the subject of checks, API is where most are done, well and truly before you arrive.

Every international flight I've ever been on the staff require the boarding pass and passport opened to the photo page, you wouldn't of got on the plane in the first place.

Really? It is a long, long time since I have been required to do this; it certainly did not happen to me last weekend.

I can't recall the last time I was asked to show photo Id for a pure domestic flight on Australia (although there have been zero in the last 12 months!) The FF card is generally all I ever needed if fronting up to a counter or just the OLCI / SSCI ticket if I didn't need to visit the counter.

In the UK it is a similar deal really.... Of course the US is a nasty can of worms!

I've had that happen as well, but with my last set of international flights it was not required, at least not ex AU.
