Just another tax. The UK APD is charged on the distance travelled and size of aircraft. It’s an environment tax but had nothing to do with environment.

This Malaysia one is a departure tax.

Just means that flights from Malaysia which transit via SIN will be $100 more competitive.

Another great way to promote tourism and aviation by encouraging the use of your airport as a transit hub...not.

There is no departure tax for domestic departures.

This proposal is not long after the unveiling of the Visit Malaysia 2020 and on top of the RM10 per hotel room night for foreigners since 2017

I can’t see how this will be of any benefit to the ailing National Carrier

But don’t forget the Passenger Movement Charge, Passenger Service Charge, Safety and Security Charge for ex-AUS travel which is much more than what’s proposed above - over AUD $100 -$120 depending on airport.

Definitely hits Malaysian more than AirAsia.

MYR150 is substantial given the fares fares that AirAsiaX D7 often offers for its premium long-haul

Reading the article:

No charge levied on transits through Malaysia of not more than 12 hours, staff on duty or using personal transport (including 'pillion passengers'!).

Charge is MYR8 / MYR20 / MYR50 / MYR150 - Depending on whether in economy or not and destination*. (~AUD 3/7/18/53)

e.g. For KUL-xSIN-MEL in economy, the charge is MYR20.

* Reduced rate for ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
