I have just returned from UK and flew with Malaysia Airlines from Adelaide to Manchester and found them to be the best international carrier I have ever flown with.
I could not fault them with anything and It surprises me to find that they are in money trouble when the service they offer is first class.
I would like to hear your thoughts on Malaysia Airlines.

I agree. Three years ago I flew NYC-DXB-KUL-SYD-KUL-DEL-KUL-DXB-NYC and had a wonderful experience. Definitely one of the best economy class products in the air.

Very friendly staff both in the air and on the ground. I had no status with them, and on one flight, at check-in the agent said "the flight isn't very full tonight, so I can block off an entire middle row in the back for you sir, so you can lie down". My jaw hit the floor! Also found I could get bulkhead or exit row seats almost every time at check-in just by asking.

Also good food & wine (by economy class standards), and good entertainment system -- at the time it was individual screens, though I don't think it was on-demand. I could be wrong though, and regardless it could have changed by now. Emirates's system probaby can't be beat though.

But the best thing is that they're very often one of the cheapest discount economy international flights :D

When I was in Malaysia last weekend, the newspapers were reporting that MH are intending to cut their fleet in half as part of a restructure. There will be significant loss of jobs (over 6,000) although some employees have been offered jobs at Air Asia, who are taking over a number of routes that MH is leaving.

I have long had the feeling that MAS has not been operating on a strciclty commerical basis. I think in recent times it has moved from an entity less controlled by the dictates of politicians to one that is more commercially aligned. And it is this move toward a more sustainable eneterprise that you see some of the current decision making.

Just my take, and I admit I could be wrong - this is just based on my observations.

So Air Asia is owned by MH? I found Air Asia to also be pretty good, up to the same standard as Western LCCs.

Their fares are also very low, even for an LCC: KUL-BKK one-way is typically US$36, on sale right now for US$13

Nobby - I don't know if Air Asia is owned fully or partially by MH. The newspaper report just mentioned that more than 1,000 MH staff would be offered jobs at Air Asia. Apparently some are also being offered jobs at EK.

Ozmark - I think you are correct. One of the reports I read indicated a change of management to more commercially experienced people.

Hopefully they will turn things around, although I wonder if the fact that they are not part of either OW or *A and that SIN and BKK are such close and dominant hubs that this is also hurting them. KUL is a large and really nice airport but it has been comparitively quiet whenever I've been through there. The small number of retail outlets, especially low number of food options and airline lounges is also noticeable.

But does this mean that standards of service will drop?

Not saying a commercial reality is necessary, but just goes to show that good ol' government support can keep the quality high.

Haven't flown MH in quite a while but it was good.

That will change if/when they eventually join SkyTeam

They would fill a gaping hole for SkyTeam: Having just Korean Air to cover Asia just isn't good enough. They're really one of the only airlines that can do it for SkyTeam, with Cathay, Singapore, and Thai already in alliances.

I must say that on the rare occasions I have flown MH, I have found them to be a fine carrier.

Their problem, as far as I am concerned, is their lack of membership of a major airline alliance. This has put me off flying them unless there is no real alternative. I'm sure that this is one of the reasons they haven't done too well financially. Hopefully they will fix this for the future. The newish and quite grand KUL airport should also be in MH's favour.

As for Air Asia, the last I heard it certainly wasn't owned or even associated with MH, but this could have changed in the fast moving world of aviation.

Thanks Nobby - wasn't aware of that.
