I'm heading to Africa for work. My flights will be on Star Alliance (Thai, Ethiopian, South African I think). I'm used to accumulating QFF points, and I'm Qantas Gold, and I would hate to see these points go to waste.

What the best Star Alliance program for an occasional flyer?

How much travel (albeit infrequent) will you have? Long or short distances?

Do you care more about status or redeeming for awards?

Do you have to fly *A airlines? I would have thought with the upcoming EK deal and then with QR joining OW in the future there might still be opportunities to earn and redeem QFF miles getting to quite a few places in Africa, plus the codeshare on SAA to JNB with QF...

I guess for the best *A you would need to work out what fares you would be flying and how they might credit to these other *A airlines... For getting status quickly i think most people say Aegean is the easiest only needing 16,000 miles or so to *A gold is it.... Crediting to one of the US airlines in the *A might mean that you have much lower fuel surcharges (or none at all) when you go to redeem your miles for flights as well...

There are a number of threads on star alliance. Best place to start looking is the search function. Search for "star" in the thread title only.

And let that be a lesson to any new folks who might be thinking of daring to ask a question!

IMHO, the advice dajop gave is quite valid.

According to both your and dw1212 join dates you've been members since 2011, so I would guess you both have some idea about the information available on the forum.

The question asked by the OP is one that has been asked many, many times by new members and answered just as many times by existing members (including myself) that it can get tiring and repetitive, particularly when the new members absorb the information and hardly ever contribute.

The search function is there for a reason, and I use it frequently myself. ;)

You will find the search box at the top right hand corner of this page, just put in your key words and press enter.....hope this helps :)

I meant this as being helpful, sorry if it came across as being sarcastic or otherwise. There is a wealth of information in various threads on star alliance with different viewpoints, that a new thread on the topic probably couldn't hope to capture.
