In fact, it is against our corporate travel policy to let it out of your sight and we are not permitted to check it in. So I guess that means that if its not allowed in the cabin then it stays at home - now that is going to make for some interesting changes to travel plans or policy.

Especially when you consider Heathrow's reputation for missing items

No. The restrictions are being enforced on all airlines.

It seems there are at least 2 different sets of restrictions. UK has no carry ons (well extremely limited).

US still allows carry ons but certain items no longer allowed (eg anything liquid or semi-liquid).

But, as alluded to by others, nothing has changed with respect to the threat. Any security system can be gotten around I am sure, if determined enough. Hopefully the current restrictions will only be temporary.

Targetted by whom? No airline is any safer than any other, with the possible exception of LY.

How do you know they weren't targetting other airlines as well?

scotland yard reported they targetted these three airlines... i agree who knows but i hope scotland yard and the fbi has an idea...

I am not sure I see your logic? How many routes have a choice between AA and GF or EK? Certainly none that I have ever flown.

I fly AA on USA domestic sectors, and I really don't see GF or EK as an option there. And in fact there is no option but to fly a USA-based airline for USA domestic flights.

I fly either AA or BA trans-Atlantic, and it would appear to me that BA has been equally implicated in the current threat. So perhaps AY or IB may be an option for OneWorld members flying Trans-Atlantic?

But I will still use the AAdvantage FF program when travelling because I see it as the best value earn/burn program for my travel plans.

I think anyone who thinks that they are safe on any airline is being a little naive especially if you ever fly QF.

Just wondering if anyone has been through a qantas lounge since yesterday - are they full to bursting? How are the queues for business travellers compared to economy class?

Try flying out of a regional airport like Albury. What security? There is none at present and the Feds will make a token gesture in the future. At least at some regionals like BNK and CFS, passengers and carry on baggage are security screened.

What is going to make a bigger impact in the "free world", a fully loaded 747 blowing up somewhere between London & New York, or a Saab 340 flying being blown up flying from Dubbo to Sydney?

Continental, American and United were mentioned as the "target" carriers by the American media. For the Americans to be interested in something the media had to come up with a spin to make it involve them a little more (that"s not negative American comment by the way, I'm very much not an anti-American!)

While obviously those three carriers were very much threatened by this latest security scare, I doubt they were at any more risk than BA, Virgin, NZ even... any of the carriers that fly from the UK to the US.

You are quite right but this latest incident will change the way people travel in the skies.

What this means exactly is anyone's guess. You may be allowed to carry on books, newspapers, magazines etc but things like laptops, ipods, mobile phones, possibly even wrist watches will have to be left in checked baggage. Anything with the potential to cause a spark needs to be taken into consideration.

in the US at the moment - did DFW-PHX yesterday....no problem at all. Saw a woman giving away a load of Gatorade that she had been prevented from taking through security. Domestic US no prob with carry-on, laptops etc. Heading to LAX and SYD tonight so it'll be interesting to see how it goes...

You won't be alone - and as I mentioned earlier, Cruise lines will be rubbing their hands together in glee if the insane carry-on restrictions continue to apply.

Seriously, making people carry their passports on board in plastic bags, when any fool with a few hundred grand to spare could be propping a SAM-7 on his shoulder on the roadside near the threshold?

Just a few comments after actually reading some of the news coverage both on line and the in the press in the UK. Re the liquids - the fear is that a number of people on the plan could each a small part of the bomb on board and then assemble the bomb on the plane. So there is no actual assembled bomb in the luggage compartment just parts in various bags etc.

I think the comment re the brazilian is in very poor taste.

I am not looking forward to my flights out of Heathrow next tuesday at this rate....

Dear Simon, the comments re the Brasilian may be in poor taste, but the UK authorities clearly don't have a good track record with these sorts of things (and what about the cover ups?).

The current UK restrictions on carryons are silly and quite over the top (and you thought the TSA was draconian).

I am putting my money where my mouth is and cancelling a ticketed stopover at LHR in Oct, replacing it with a stopover at TXL (indeed part of altogether a much nicer country).

And in case you were wondering, I am a British citizen (amongst other things) ...
