JT have you recovered?
Taking one for the team was very brave.
I used to do all economy to the US about 3 times a year. I stopped that following a heart operation in 1994 and had to figure out how to fly best for what I call the wholesale price.

I have recovered and am getting back on a 787 for MELi-PER. Upgrade request in. Extra champagne ordered for the MEL F lounge!

Great thinking JT. Champagne helps when or if all else fails. Those F lounges do get us in!

Some people really have NOTHING better to do...initially I thought it was a condensed clip say 10-15 mins, then i realised it was not.....

He's got quite a few of these, in fact it's essentially his entire channel. I like the concept but would prefer a condensed version :)

Amazing what a paid review does to the experience

------

"Everything has been superb," said Jason Haddad from Perth.

The 39-year-old clinical psychologist normally flies business or premium economy, but declared this the best economy flight he'd ever done.

Brits Mark and Suzy Beasley, 62 and 63, originally from London and living in Perth for the past 18 months, also had nothing but praise for the experience.

"It's fantastic," said Mr Beasley, adding that being on board a plane for 17 hours didn't bother the couple. "We've done a 14-hour haul from Singapore before and this is just three hours more."

The writer travelled on board QF9 as a guest of Qantas.....ie in return for the free airfare, write +ve things about our product even if it is cough!

Good approach. If having to travel Y on the Nightmareliner, it's important to not be able to feel your legs......

I did QF9 to PER on Friday, and got a points upgrade to J (25k).

Obviously there is a considerable difference between Y and J, but even more so on the 787. If I was going to spend 17 hours on a plane, I would be comfortable to do it in the 787's J.

I am about to catch an A330 back to MEL in Y, so another comparison coming up.

JT you have become a great product tester.
If only I had a great product to test. ;)

I sat quite happily in an A330 Y seat trans-con yesterday. I consciously checked the shoulder room. There was room to spare as I sat back flat against the seat, at the same time as my seat mate. So that seat width difference made all the difference to my comfort. Bugger the extra legroom on the 787.

I think I am on a 737 in a few weeks, so that will complete the QF (mainline) quadrella. Although I expect I will have oodles of leg room if I snag my usual row 4.

Edit: oops, might have to find a 747 soon, to be really sure.

JT have you considered running up some CC sign ups for upgrade points so we can have a happy face?

SYD-SCL , obviously :)

I'm doing that on Monday so I'll test the wines on your behalf.....

Sales on the direct 787-9 Perth-London must be slow as we know 3 ladies who have booked economy on points out about 10 days from departure date.

I taxied past it at LHR today and gave it a wave and the thumbs down. Won't see me on it any time soon!

Very nice trip report. You're much braver than I am @JessicaTam.

Not very keen on doing this route and it sounds like this will need to be an aircraft to avoid on other QF routes.

Sometimes when talking to people who say it’s not that bad traveling Y to Europe I’m thinking, yea sounds doable but then remember doing it myself (via Asia) some years ago and it was bad, very bad! Can only imagine how 17hr would feel like in that narrow seat...
A RTW in economy is not that bad if you're on 747s and A380s. Even better in bulkhead/exit row.

But this length of flight sounds like torture.
