Made any travel mistakes lately?

The rookie mistake was thinking Air Asia in SIN will check luggage through.

They only offer the service if you have purchased a 'fly-thru' flight. SIN-CNX comes up via DMK only as fly-thru. Any other itinerary requires bags to be collected by the look of their FAQs

Well I decided to change some accommodation bookings in Rome for a trip this coming May. So I cancelled the original booking at no charge and re-booked a nicer place on Expedia which was a decent deal considering the quality hotel. Non-refundable booking. Only problem was, I booked it for May 2019.
So I am anxiously waiting a reply to have it changed to 2018 or $1500 could be wasted. I should never book anything at 10PM.

Had a 7am MEL>BNE>HKG flight last week. Got up at 4.30 to get ready and make the trip to the airport with my wife dropping me off. Packed my suitcase, carry on, a package for work and another set of 2m long tubes into the car. Get to the airport and forgot my laptop bag oopps o_O

The SO made the trip back home to pick up my bag, luckily we live 20 minutes from the airport and had plenty of time to spare.

Easy fix. A flight to Rome would be less than $1500 so better value if you start planning another trip. :D

I arrived in London last month to find that my £10 notes were no longer valid.
Hey? How can legal tender be invalidated? If I'm not mistaken (which I may well be), even our $1 and $2 notes are still legal tender, if you're silly enough to spend them that way.

Happened to me in LHR a few months ago - tried to use the old notes. No go with the shops, but they all kindly directed me to the travel exchange place who happily changed them for new ones.....

Not quite on-topic, but this reminds me of those unaware of legislation on legal tender, and how they comment on videos on social media. The main one being the man paying a parking fine in Adelaide with $60 worth of silver coins.
I guess each country has their own legislation regarding this. IIRC, Malaysia removed a certain denomination from it's currency a little while ago. Same thing, no one would take the 1RM coin from memory (it is a bit sketchy as to the actual value).

The UK have changed their 5 and 10 pound notes to new ones and they said after a certain date the old ones would no longer be valid. Some banks will take them but if not you have to post them to the Bank of England or go and visit them

Wasn't it India a couple of years ago said the large notes were no longer valid to help reduce the black market

It sure was! I got caught up in the the middle of it. November 2016. They gave about 12 hours notice before declaring all 100 and 500 rupee notes to be non-legal tender. These were the most commonly used notes for counterfeit and underworld funding. I'd just taken out a bunch of said currency the day prior! They started an exchange for new valid notes (complete with ensuring that you were declaring an income for taxation purposes) a couple of days later.

Luckily, I was able to convince one of my staff to take my notes and and they gave me some other, higher denominations of good tender

We do need a dislike button for those previous two posts
Only need a 'mildly inconvenienced' button for my case - but a double dislike for daft009 is needed, though! Ouch!

lots of worse cases came out of that (more than my $500).. and hasn't improved the overall situation 1 bit over there.
that'ts the worst bit!

so many poor people died.
fake notes of the new ones are already in circulation
Lavish wedding angers cash-hit Indians this minister conveniently spent ~AU$100mil all in cash a little before the big secret news that no one was supposed to know about... yeah right!

a family friend had sold a commercial retail shop 2 days before the big bombshell, as usual in cash over there.
suddenly in 48hrs he lost 40% in converting that cash into cash in the bank account.

anyway, i'm sorry i'm derailing this thread :p

*puts hand up* Another person who lost a bit of dosh thanks to that - wasn't able to get back over in time to exchange the notes. Ended up back over there of course not long after, but was too late by then. Sods law!

It was a good thing @Flashback was able to take them off my hands as he could still swap them at a bank.

Yep. Im currently stuck with a few of these, can't use them and can only exchange at the bank of england. Tried other banks but without an account with them they won't exchange.

What really pisses me off is that I got these from Travelex in Feb but they didn't warn me. They expired March 1st.

Fancy Travelex not telling you they were due to expire. I bet they were happy to find a sucker to take them so they didn't have to return them to the UK for exchange purposes.

I do have a couple of £50 notes I'll have to exchange next time I visit.

I travelled to London in October and when i exchanged currency with Travelex they were very good at warning me exactly what to expect with the changes in legal tender. I had no trouble spending every single penny whilst there.

Woke up yesterday morning to find out that GF and her sister are stuck at LAX due to a delayed flight.

Go to to IHG and book an airport hotel for them. I was on call overnight and was sleep deprived. It’s 8am in Qld. Check the dates carefully 18/04/2018 and use my points to do the booking...... only to find out that, due to the time difference it’s 17/04/2928 in Los Angeles

Usually not an issue but because it’s a booking made with points it can’t be changed. Had to cancel it and make a new one ‍♂️
