MacAir in in receivership

According to Flight Global:

Sudden receivership at Australia's MacAir leaves passengers stranded

MacAir's sudden move into receivership has meant thousands of its passengers are now left stranded.

All of today's flights were suspended, says an official at MacAir who wishes to remain anonymous.

She says the airline is offering passengers a full refund on tickets.

..and when all else fails, blame the government subsidies

THE owner of collapsed regional carrier MacAir Airlines says he will sue the State Government for damages, claiming they should have known its air subsidy arrangements would send the company broke.

However, Transport Minister John Mickel said the onus on whether the subsidies were viable was on the company not the Government.

Wow. More of the "blame others" culture.

Terry Byrt, a North Queensland mining magnate, said he bought MacAir last year just a few days after the company finalised a five-year $4.7 million contract with Queensland Transport.

While he knew about the contract, he said he did not know it was going to `drown it to death'.

"The company was losing $700,000 to $800,000 a month and that's just on the Queensland Transport contract," he said.

Mr Byrt claimed the Government failed to undertake any due diligence when awarding the contract and that the only factor that ruled the decision was the low price of the tender.

"They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to undertake a tender for a contract, this whole process took 10 months, so why give it to a person who can't perform it?

"This whole thing is a sham."

Mr Byrt said he went to Queensland Transport `time and time again' to lift the subsidies but that by the time they were increased, it could not meet the performance levels to qualify for the subsidies.

"They agreed to drop the performance levels down to 50 per cent from 75 per cent to get some people home at Christmas," he said.

"They paid us a two-weekly payment representing (an extra) $126,000.

Maybe *HE* should have done due diligence on Macair before buying it...
