We can fly Singapore airlines to Mumbai business class. However we need to travel onward to ebb Uganda via either ethiopian airlines or Kenyan airlines or Egyptian airlines. They are all star alliance carriers.
What's the best way to ensure that our bags get all the way through? Is that possible? If not how long do you need to allow between international flights to collect bags and recheck them?

If they're all *A carriers, you should be able to check the bags all the way to your final destination when checking in for the first flight. Just ask the check-in agent to do it, and make sure you have a copy of the ticket for the other booking with you. Note I did say should though - I'm not sure if it is possible 100% of the time. Someone with more experience doing this may be able to chime in and assist.

Yes the operative word is 'should'.

As well as the airline inter-operation which I think is now the easier part, there is also the customs consideration. For instance, when I was entering South Africa via JNB, everyone has to collect their bags. Much the same as re-entering Australia through Sydney for a connecting flight to BNE, everyone has to collect bags.

Last year when I travelled from BNE - BAH using SQ and Gulfair, the nice Gulfair people used my original bag tags to get the bags through to the destination.

"Should" is right as the others have said... some airlines are more helpful than others...

BUT.. Kenya Airways is NOT a *A carrier.. so I'd take them off the list of options.....
