Folks,

I had a rummage through the website and didn't find anything current under this heading, so if I am wrong, tread softly.

I am travelling to the US in late Jan 2013 for a conference.
The location is Dallas, Texas.

I am taking my wife with me.
We are flying economy with Qantas - we are both Qantas Club members.

Don't know whether I am suffering the after effects of post Christmas drinks but the Qantas website seems to be saying...

Checked Baggage Allowance | Qantas

3 pieces each, maximum 23kg per piece?? (sounds like a heck of a lot to me x 2).

Anyway, quite simply my question is as follows; if we take any internal flights to elsewhere in the US or Canada are we going to get hammered with extra charges for luggage? Note - I haven't booked the internal flights as yet

regards

Rono

if it's all on the one ticket from Oz then being a USA destination your first luggage allowance should apply for the entire trip.

I think those limits are correct for higher staus or classes.
Maybe not for bronze nobodies.

You will be hammered domestically bringing one bag in the USA, unless you have status.
With AA you must be Silver or up for one free bag, otherwise $25 I think.
Though for US internal flights booked via Qantas in the original international ticket from Aust, but on AA codeshare, my no status friend was not charged either.
For other trips we booked while there with AA he was charged., while I wasnt.
Do not go overweight either...International is often higher than domestic weight limit.

Also remember you have to carry what you bring...or pay the porters.

Yep, 3 x 23kg for QC members traveling to/from 'The Americas'.

You will likely get pinged for domestic flights if they are not on the same tickets as the international travel and you do not have any status (QC does not count) with the airline or alliance (but if you fly in business or first you may get exceptions). Also note QC baggage allowance privileges do not extend to any other airlines.

You would need to check in detail each airline's policy, but for example on AA, unless you are exempt for some reason, it'll cost $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second, and apparently a whopping $150 for any subsequent bag. If you have 3 each that you need to carry then this may make it preferable to book discounted F fares to exempt at least the first two bags (only allowed 2 x exempt bags, I don't know if the third bag then counts as the first).

Any chance you could store some bags say at DFW or somewhere off-airport while you are travelling internally and just take hand luggage or one checked bag only? It may work out cheaper.
