Low-cost airline makes WA deal : thewest.com.au

An international low-cost airline will start direct flights into Western Australia from Kuala Lumpur in November.

A new deal between AirAsia X, Tourism WA and Westralia Airports Corporation could inject nearly $100 million into the Western Australian economy in the service’s first year, Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said this morning.

“The introduction of direct flights between Kuala Lumpur to Perth should see visitor numbers and spending increase significantly as holiday-makers take advantage of low prices,” Ms McHale said.

Interesting that they would choose Perth as the next port of call after the Gold Coast.

Would the higher costs of flying out of Sydney or Melbourne put them of this type of decision? Or are they afraid of competing with JQ head to head this early in their development?

Are they using B73x's or A32x's ?
If so range could have been a consideration... ie KUL-PER is 2563 miles and KUL-SYD is 4088 miles.
I did hear i think they had some A33x's on order but not sure if they were intended for these routes.

Also, maybe PER Int was easier to get gates... (yes, even with the lack of resources we suffer!)

It's advertised as being in brand new A330's. They look a bit squashy though - looked a 3-3-3 config.

I think gates for int flights are easy to come by. I had though that MH had used up all the capacity that was available for Malaysian carriers to BNE/MEL/PER/SYD, so they must have been able to get some more.
