Lounge pass when to link?

Husband is giving son a lounge pass for this coming Tuesday evening.
Son doesn't know if he will be at syd airport much before the flight .
Can he link the pass a few minutes before going into the lounge ?
Just so as not to waste if he doesn't have to visit the lounge ?
One very sad dropped from gold son

It has to be linked to an eligible flight at any time before the earlier of a) check-in closes or b) departure gate closing for that flight.
If you link your complimentary Invitation to an eligible flight within 23 hours of departure, there may be over 20 minutes delay for the linking to complete after the link process is completed in the portal.
You will receive a confirmation email which you can present with your boarding pass at the lounge entrance.
