Okay, the Social Ambassador is in need of some advice.

I'm currently in the UK, on holiday, arrived from FLR yesterday and flying to JTR tomorrow... however BA in their infinite wisdom decided that losing my bags at FLR would be a smart thing to do, and I'm now without everything but my camera and laptop (and the clothes I arrived in yesterday).

I have travel insurance with Columbus Direct (AFF discount) and have bought some underwear, socks, a shirt and shorts. I'll probably need to buy more when I get to Greece of course. I should note I have no faith in BA finding my bags and even getting them to me before the week is up in Santorini. Well done BA... probably wont be booking with you again!

We filed a missing bag claim at LCY when they stopped the carousel and told the remaining pax that 33 bags had been unloaded due to weight (despite some of the biggest bags I'd ever seen actually going round the carousel and my bag weighing 13kg!! I've used the WorldTracer site several times, but to no avail, all I keep seeing is: TRACING CONTINUES. PLEASE CHECK BACK LATER.

We've given the call centre a ring tonight to advise them of our address for the next week, but it looks like BA has ruined the holiday!

So my question would be, what can I slug them for, what am I entitled to, what should be my next steps?

Thanks all!

This may be a good site to have a look through re the EU Air Traveller Rights: Baggage - Air (Click on the 'Lost Luggage' pic to expand it, with info there.

The Wiki version: Regulation 261/2004 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I suspect they will only pay what they have to under the EU rules, but they do have to inform you accurately, up front.

Hopefully you photographed your bags as they were packed? If not, start making a list of contents. If your memory is like mine, it'll take several goes to remember all the small stuff.

I once went into detail with Qantas management why they couldn't tell me with any accuracy at all where my international-delayed-bag actually was. Long story short, if the bag is found at the departure port, and there are instructions to send it to the destination port, the only time they next know where it is is when it comes out of customs at the destination end. They can't tell what flight its on, as it can be offloaded or not loaded at the discretion of the sending port/flight. The 'tracking' stuff only says where it should be, not where it actually is, in transit. Obviously your situation is different, but I suspect the principle may be the same. As you say, don't expect it anytime soon, and don't belive promises of delivery until you see the bag in front of you. Depressing I know, but you have the pragmatic attitude already.

Edit: I know you are perfectly capable of googling :) but here is a news story from the UK, may have some practical tips. Compensation for delayed luggage - Telegraph

When you filed the lost luggage report did BA advise you of a daily spending limit with regards to replacement clothing and personal items? THe amount payable should increase the longer your bags are delayed.

Aside from that, your insurance may cover you, but may restrict their right to pay if you could already claim fro the airline. (A quick read of the Columbus Direct policy seems to confirm this)

Thanks. BA suggested they wouldn't pay anything immediately and didn't give a timeframe for when they would.

It's really making me appreciate Qantas... And I'm not negative against Qantas, they're just better at handling things.

Qantas refuses to pay for 24 hours according to their customer charter. Even if they lose your luggage and you're away on a business meeting. (actually while googing their customer charter it brought up an old post of yours on Fraser island where they didn't pay even when you produced receipts!)

I asked the company representative on here why Qantas has such a policy - but there hasn't been an answer.

I remember that trip. BA are seemingly doing the same.

An update, BA eventually replied and offered to reimburse costs for things I had to buy while without my luggage.

Had a similar experience flying BA from EDI to VEN via LGW - got to Venice no case - no one gave a hoot ! Lost luggage took the details of where we were staying and said when the bag arrives we will send it to your hotel. No hint of can we help or there is assistance if required . Bag in question turned up the following afternoon apparently off loaded in LGW for whatever reason best known only to BA . Seven flights in total with BA , second time a bag lost or "delayed" . That was the last time .
