Los Angeles to Toronto -- How many QFF points needed?

I'm trying to get to Toronto from Sydney using QFF points late October but I'm not sure how many points are needed. I
know I have to go to LA first then change planes but its the LA/Toronto route I ned to know how many points to use.

Using QF points table for award flights.

Los Angeles (LAX) - Toronto (YYZ) at 2174 miles fits into Zone 3 which is 18,000 points each way, and as you can't book this online you will also be charged the assisted booking fee of 2,500 points. Total points needed for LAX-YYZ return is 38,500 points.

SYD-LAX fits into Zone 8 which is 48,000 points each way. I am not sure if you can combine the SYD-LAX-YYZ legs together because this fits into Zone 10 which is 64,000 points each way, saving you 2,000 points each way.

Yes you can as long as dont stop over (ie spend 24 hours or more) in Los Angeles.

Note that AA only has one daily non-stop LAX-YYZ flight, and its a 737-800. So getting availability could be a problem. You may have to round via DFW or ORD, which provides much more flexibility, but could increase the cost.

Note that LAX-YYZ and LAX-ORD-YYZ are in Zone 3 (1200-2400 miles), while LAX-DFW-YYZ is zone 4 (its 2434 miles).

For what it's worth, when I flew to Toronto last year, I flew Qantas to LA and then AA to chicago and on to toronto, because the choice of flights and times was much better. It may be a pain to stopover, but if you have trouble with the LAX - tornoto flight, then this can be a good option, as AA has several flights each day to toronto.
