hi all,

i'm after some help with understanding how the stopover system works with QF please.

i'm looking to fly SYD-AUS return, which will route through either DFW or LAX. During the trip i also would like to make a trip to say New York ( > 24 hour stay in both AUS and JFK). In order to make use of the free stopover included in the fare, am i required to buy a SYD-AUS return, or a SYD-JFK return?

Additionally, on the flight back i see that i can also have a free stopover. Is this a stopover in the USA or Australia? i.e. would it be AUS-LAX, stopover, LAX- SYD, or would it be AUS-LAX-BNE, stopover, BNE-SYD.

Cheers

Is this going to be a paid fare on QF or a QF reward ?
Have you phoned Qantas and asked ?

If stopovers are permitted in Australia it's normally at the international gateway point only or it could be at your international gateway in the US eg LAX.

Sometimes in addition to 'free' stopovers some fares allow additional stopovers for AUD100.00 which can be of benefit sometimes.

For example you could do SYD QF x/DFW YY AUS YY NYC QF LAX QF SYD where AUS is your stopover on the outbound fare component, NYC is your destination (fare turnaround point) & thereby a stopover, with LAX the stopover point on your return fare component.

Another example could be SYD x/DFW YY AUS YY NYC YY x/DFW QF BNE QF SYD where AUS is your stopover on the outbound fare component, NYC your destination but BNE on the way back.

It's worth doing a comparison between the fare for the entire itinerary on the one ticket as per the above routings vs flying ex SYD/DFW - LAX/SYD on QF then checking the airfares separately DFW/AUS/NYC/LAX as sometimes it may be cheaper.

Keep in mind that luggage would be included on the internal US sectors if all on the one ticket whereas if purchased separately may cost extra unless you have status with that airline which allows free baggage.
