Looking for past thread or post.........please help

Hi to all out there.........about a month ago I was reading somewhere here about Qantas being sold and the effect on QFF points, whether to transfer points from CC companies or not. Also there was information about the total worth of QFF points, from memory it someone was saying it was 1.3 Billion $$. It also mention that CC companies buy the points from Qantas. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get back to this information as I want to read it again and also share it with a friend...........I have looked and looked and cannot find it again. HELP Please.

Serfty..................you were right. It was very unlikely as I have just found what I was looking on Lonely Planet, travel forum. I had googled Qantas Float. See below, some of it is interesting..........points 5 & 6 especially.

Thanks again for trying to help..........it worked in the end. I remembered I had forwared it to my husband so just went back through my sent emails. Amazing

1. It's concerning - although not immediately. It's more likely that the spin off will see benefits eroded over time.

The suggestion there could be a time limit on points, for example - that won't happen straight away as the ACCC would block it. People who took flight with Qantas did so on the understanding their points would never expire, so to make them expire would be a breach of contract.

BUT, the new owners could quarantine old points, and insist on this for new points.

Not sure how they do this - I always assumed FFPs were a liability/debt, not a profit centre.

3. Yes, Hamer. Westpac did exactly this a couple of years ago. They DIDNT have the points erode over time BUT ....they have "old" and new" points. Both are $1 per point but the "new" require double the points to get 1 Qantas FF point. Justin23

4. I believe its actually the "mailing list" thats worth the money, especially given its generally middle and upper class people who have FF membership.

If the points expired but you could get a seat on any flight provided there was a free seat, then maybe that would be desirable for a lot of people.

5. Ian -- most of the FFPs are 'earned', not through flying but from credit card spend. The CC companies buy the points from Qantas. I guess the points earned from flying could be considered a liability but the CC ones are already paid for. The money's in the bank and they'll only let you have award seats that would have otherwise been empty.

I've got 350,000 of the little buggers. -- Might be a big trip coming up sooner than expected if I lose my nerve. Hamer_Radshaw

6. Yes, I would be transferring those CC points soon. Qantas may be able to declare those points worthless, or worth less as they are not a direct qantas earn. ianw6705

7. All my ANZ credit card points are transferred to Qantas directly each month, and lumped with kosher QFFPs. Been that way for about three years.

10. My Qantas branded Amex points are the same as ian's ANZ card - transferred every month. (My Citibank visa points can be redeemed for all sorts of things incl QF FF points)

The points I refer to at#5 are already in the FF account. The dilemma is, do I take the chance and keep saving them for a 'Oneworld Award' round the World trip I have planned for about 2009/2010 (2 people in business class = 560,000 points) or do I go next year (2 people in cattle class = 280,000 points).

I really hate it when the goalposts are shifted in the middle of the game.

11. No, Colin, but in hindsight it would've been a godsend as we got hopelessly lost on several occasions. I decided against it because of the initial outlay and then having to fork out a couple of hundred dollars on top of that to download the requisite maps. We couldn't justify adding that on to an already expensive holiday.

Funnily enough we took a wrong turn heading out of Budapest heading for Croatia and drove for three hours in overcast conditions in the wrong direction. When the sun finally poked through I informed the Dogwoman that we appeared to be heading south east instead of south west. Not good. It's always easier to blame the navigator in situations like this. We asked another motorist who had stopped on the side of the road for directions and he said - no worries, let me just punch the necessary info into my Navman and we'll get you sorted. Which he did and sent us back in the opposite direction. Which is nice.
