Looking for new carry-on rollerbag. Any suggestions?

I know this has been discussed before, but looking for current opinions - especially since bag manufacturers seem to change their range about once per year!

Fairly simple specifications:

1. Has to meet the Australian International carry-on standards for Qantas (ie. 115cm Length x Width x Depth). Other airlines have similar international standards (unless travelling to certain paranoid countries!) so if I meet the Qantas standard, I should be ok with other airlines.
2. Has to be very light. With the Qantas standards of 7Kg, that doesn't leave much room for a heavy suitcase and the contents. At least some other overseas carriers allow up to 15Kg++

Any current recommendations? I normally buy Samsonite luggage, but open to other brands. Price wise, would only start worrying over the $200 mark.

It's only being used for clothes etc, so not worried about laptop pockets or document pockets etc...

I have a Samsonite Ultralite 115cm roll on that I am quite happy with - pretty much indestructable so far. Perfect for 3-4 day trips interstate or OS.

The only issues I have had with it both relate to specific carry on rules:
- JQ and VS: Too big for their 105cm requirement.
- QF: Stupid @#$%^! 7kg carry on requirement. With the case weighing 3kg when empty, it doesn't leave much for clothes. A spare pair of shoes plus a couple of jeans and it's all over :-|

Still if you get it past the boarding check at the gate (pretty easy when you do online checkin ;) it is a great size.

I'm sure the 7kg is an OHS regulation, but surely we could maybe relax it a tad with the disclaimer that over 7kg is your own responsibility to lift into the overhead. Call it 10kg max. Otherwise the extra volume of the 115cm bag (and advantage for QF) is somewhat wasted.

Just watch if travelling through UK as they include handles and wheels in the measurements (unlike everywhere else) and anecdotally the gauges are maybe 1cm too small. Unlike many other places, if they suspect carryon is too large then it does get checked in the gauge.

Current UK requirements is One Piece only, with max dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22" x 18" x 10"). Exceed in any one of those dimensions and you are oversize.

Note, this is a larger size (in height) than QF permit both domestically and internationally.

For reference:
  • Domestic is .. 48cm (19in) + 34cm (13in) + 23cm (9in) = 105cm (41in)
  • International is 56cm (22in) + 36cm (14in) + 23cm (9in) = 115cm (45in)

Qantas actually do allow a (single) 115cm bag on domestic flights (Dash8 excepted of course). With only a 7kg limit though, you are probably better off with 2 of the smaller bags.
(Until we 'harmonize' that aspect of Australian carryon rules of course)

Interesting variations.

NZ allows
- international 115cm, 7kg, 1 piece + personal item (slim laptop bag is treated as personal item ^) + extra piece for business/*G (except ex-LHR and to/from US where only 1 piece no personal item permitted)
- domestic jet 115cm, 7kg, 1 piece + personal item + extra piece for business/*G
- domestic prop 105cm, 7kg, 1 piece + personal item + extra piece for business/*G

And they dont mess around, too big, too many it goes as checked baggage. I saw a women pleading that her hand bag idin't count as a bag, but she was told fir it in the other bag or choose which goes as checked. The only thing I saw a guy get away with was his bag and a box that contained an xbox I think it was.

Which is how it should be. If the rules state 1 piece, then 1 piece it is and there should be enforcement of it to ensure consistency

I agree, I was shocked and unimpressed when the guy obviously floughting the rules got his box through, it was as large as most peoples baggage. The screening person did take a second look at the pax and it appeared that something was about to be said.

Not too many specific reccomendations coming forward for Mal yet?

It is extremely difficult to fill a 115cm carryon without far exceeding the weight limit. I have used an 105cm std Antler Litestream 46 for over a year now - it weights only 2.1 kg, and yet you'd have to be packing only cotton wool to fill it while keeping the loaded weight under 7kg. Its bang on the Qantas domestic max, so it gets a few sideways looks, but just fits the gauges (unless extremely over-stuffed and therefore also overweight). Good long handle, good wheels, good price (as low as A$89.95 on the web). I wouldn't bother buying an extra, larger (115cm) carryon just because the international rules say I can use one.

I have a few Paklite trolly type cases - the cabin carryon one is about 2 kg and is a great no-nonsense bag that just keeps working well. Sorry don't know the model.
Got mine at David Jones - but saw them at Peters Of Kensington (online) for about $100 below normal price (whatever that means).

Sorry I didnt get specific since the only one I have bought in the past few years was through SQ (using up some vouchers) who no longer offer this particular model.
