Hi all,

Trying to get some information. Have a QF ticketed flight from BNE to East Coast US. Flying BNE - LAX - BOS.
Due to recurrent flight changes I'm having to spend a night in LA - Arriving 1730 and departing following morning 0900.

Bags will be checked through to BOS but when I collect my bags after customs @ TBIT, can I take them with me to the hotel overnight and then recheck them the following morning as they would be tagged through to BOS still? My onward flight will be at another terminal than TBIT so presumably I do it there - I will already have my boarding pass LAX - BOS from when I first check in.

TIA.

Who told you that your bags will be checked through to BOS? Normally an overnight transit such as this (in excess of 12 hours too), means your bags would only be checked to LAX and you’ll recheck the following morning. Have you been told otherwise?

Yes. But as per previous comment, they probably won’t be “checked through” anyway. To be safe, you could specifically ask them not to be.

If they are checked through, it’s probably academic since you‘re leaving the airport and returning to a checkin counter.

Everyone has to collect their bags upon arrival into the USA anyway, so its in effect the same as having your bag only checked to LAX. You can then walk out with it and check it back in the next day. Just make sure you keep your baggage receipt . I also used the AA app on my phone, its really good as it tracks your baggage also, telling you when its been collected, loaded onto which plane etc. This was how I knew one of my bags decided to divert to Phoenix for some reason.

You will need to clear customs and claim your baggage. It will not go through to BOS, you will need to check it in the next morning in whatever terminal you are departing from.
I usually stay overnight at the Crown Plaza or Sheraton Hotel, both have shuttles running every 10 mins or so. If you don't have too much luggage I put them on a luggage trolley and walk to these 2 hotels, takes about ~15 minutes from TBIT. TBIT is the furthest terminal from these hotels so the walk back the next morning to the domestic terminals are a lot closer. Try to take the trolley up to your room as you may not be able to get one in the morning

I've done this before as well, the luggage was "tagged through" the final destination but obviously collected at LAX customs. The next morning (we stayed at one of the many Marriott's - Renaissance, I think), we just took our luggage to the AA checkin desk with the same tags still on them. I don't recall for sure if they accepted them as-is or printed new ones, but it was not an issue for them.

Interesting... I'll have to get the AA app for my flight next week because my bag often gets lost (yay, lucky me!) and it'd be good to be able to track it.

Keeping your luggage cart in your room is incredibly rude as it means the carts aren't useable for others during that whole period. I can't believe this is seriously being advocated here. Aren't we Australians who are brought up to be thoughtful of others? Let's not stoop to the levels of ugly "[insert unfriendly nationality here]" just because we're overseas.

Note: If you can't be bothered to return the cart all the way to the lobby, at least bring it back to the lift lobby on your floor.

Edit: I thought we were talking about hotel luggage trolleys, hence my note. I missed that it was referring to the airport trolleys being taken all the way out of the airport to the hotels, but either way the same sentiment applies.

Why would you steal a trolley and walk with your bags for 15 minutes when the hotel has a free shuttle?

You don't need to act dumb if you do this...

Your not "stealing" it and some of us like to walk and stretch our legs after a 12 or 13 hour flight. Hey if you don't like my suggestion then don't do it. Don't put the proverbial on us who do. :(

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to take the airport luggage carts beyond the immediate airport precinct - same as you can't take your coles / woolies trolley back to your apartment building (though many do).

And like mentioned above, if everybody did that, there'd be no carts.

Go nuts if you want a walk, and I have, but if you can't do it without a cart, don't do it.

If you are staying at the 2 hotels I have mentioned as being close enough to do this, they are stop over hotels, and my suggestion was that I walk them back the next day, which I do. I dont think that the 30 or 40 people who might walk will deplete the supply of trolleys at LAX

There's a lot more than 2 hotels in that area.

This is the reason why shops have started to put geofencing on their trolleys. Wouldn't be surprised if SmartCarte do the same if they haven't already (and/or have a tracker on them). They are valuable and companies take action to stop these practices. Not saying you'd get arrested like the guy in the below article, but I'm sure the company is not cool with you taking it for a night.

But you do you.
