Long flights may not increase blood clot risk | Travel Advice | News.com.au

YOU'VE seen all of the warnings about blood clots forming on long plane trips if you sit still, but a new study suggests that such inactivity may not actually increase the risk of clots.
On the other hand, the findings suggest that keeping your whole body, or a single limb, immobile due to paralysis or injuries could put you at risk of blood clots that may spread to the lungs and cause serious harm or death.

With all due respect to the authors of the study their study was not designed to assess the risk of air travel at all.Less so indeed than many other studies that have suggested a link.
However it still points out that it is long travel, not neccessarily a plane flight, and immobility that is the risk factor. As well it is certainly not limited to economy class travel.
I should also point out that journalists as always only highlight the part of the study that they want and it often gives a slant to the article that is not neccesarily in agreement with the main body of argument in the study.

I have a close friend who was afflicted with DVT after driving to the Sydney Olympics from Melbourne.

It goes for any situation where you may be relatively immobile for long periods - try to move/excercise on a regular basis.

Just highlighting a couple of lines that the journos and others often forget:

  1. many other studies that have suggested a link.
  2. points out that it is long travel, not neccessarily a plane flight, and immobility that is the risk factor.
