Does anyone else sometimes use the on-board Wi-Fi to listen to live ATC at the airport you're flying in/out of?

Admittedly I'm an AvGeek, but I found it really interesting to follow along and hear what ATC and the pilots of my aircraft are talking about.

No, but I'm going to in the future. It sounds like a great idea,. Although I don't think MrsK would happy with me relating to her, everything that is going on with ATC.

United has/had live ATC on the inflight audio. I recall tuning in years ago when I was travelling to the US a lot.

Mmm not so sure. 🤔

Maybe I don’t want to know whats going on and worry about nothing if I misconstrue what I hear (or don’t hear).

Just trust all will be ok, chill and enjoy my flight in ignorance.

Interesting, I’d never considered it.
Will give it a try on my next flight out of MEL in 2 weeks.

Wouldn’t even know how to get connected to it!

Used to listen to United’s livestream years ago. Was at SFO one day and our aircraft was told to hold at a certain point and wait for the company 767 to pass.

Three seconds later a 757 passes.

I though ‘oh, bit strange, I thought they said a 767’

Almost instantly ATC was back on saying, ‘not the 757 that just passed you, the 767 coming up’. 🤣🤣

Unless you know the airspace and frequency assignments you will struggle to follow. While tower and ground are easy, it gets complicated with approach and departure along with enroute.

Pretty sure UA was just the Tower / Ground via IFE. Not sure there was anything on route and what there was, was at the Captains discretion via a On / Off switch.

The old UA Channel 9 was interesting when I flew YUPPs for *A status (Airpoints).

Around 2010 give or take, I believe the pilots generally began to turn it off.
