2 quick questions if I could ask the brain trust?

1. Is there a website which list of airports which can be used to transit from Europe to Australia (eg DOH/BKK/CMB etc). I'm trying to book a return from Europe in January and can get from Europe to Asia/middle east but as always it is very difficult to get from there to Australia. I only found out recently that Male is a potential transit point to get back to Australia from Europe so wondering if there are others.

2. Second question is if I fly QR988 (Qatar's Doha-Canberra flight) can I get off in Melbourne (it has a 1.5 hour stop in Melbourne) if I only bring hand luggage? This would be my last transit point so no concern about Qantas cancelling any remaining legs.

1. Not a list as such but if you fiddle around with ✈ FlightConnections - All flights worldwide on a flight map! you can probably deduce
2. My understanding was no but that does seem quite a long time to be left on the plane

ITA matrix is a useful tool to look for options (not necessarily lists though).

RE: leaving the QR flight - yes, if it the last segment on a booking but I wouldn’t make a habit of it and be sure to tell someone you’re not reboarding!

This link will give you all connections within the Oneworld alliance:

You can then enter an origin, destination (eg. MEL) or both to then limit flights shown

1. Tools above are good recommendations. I personally like itamatrix. Other options historically were Finnair RTW fares - enter Aus via Asia and return via Nth America.

2. I may have missed the memo but isn’t QR988 via SYD to CBR not via MEL? Same answer applies - you can get off in SYD if HLO and “unable to reboard” but making a habit of that will leave the airline liable to pursue you for the fare difference.

.Yep. You missed the memo. From ExecTrav AU

The Oneworld member and Virgin Australia partner previously flew to Canberra as an add-on leg for a second Sydney service, but now it’s Melbourne in the spotlight thanks to a “strategic agreement” with the Victorian state government “to increase connectivity to Melbourne to further boost trade and tourism.”
My view is “strategic agreement” is a bunch of tax payer money thrown at a very wealthy airline/country by DanA.

This may seem a bit trite… but pretty much any city can be a transit point to australia. Depending on your alliance - oneworld, star alliance or skyteam - those airlines cover anywhere to anywhere.

The number of stops is one determining factor, as in how many you are willing to take. Mileage or points cost may be another. Entry or transit requirements another.

You can transfer via anywhere in Asia including Hong Kong, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Denpasar, anywhere in the USA or Canada, south america… and so on. Breaking your trip into sectors will help identify any opportunities.

The airport web sites generally list flight arrivals & departures. But some work to establish all (change day to day).
The wikipedia airport entries often list airlines & routes. Some may now not be up to date and/or include routes that may start in the future

You can transit all sorts of places to get to the last jumping off point for Australia, but in terms of oneworld flights non-stop to Australia (i.e. the last sector), that is a very finite list.

Asia: SIN, CGK, DPS, KUL, DEL, BLR, CMB, BKK, MNL, HKG, NRT, HND, SGN*, HKT*, KIX*, TPE*, ICN (from Dec)
Middle East: DOH, DXB*
Europe: LHR, FCO
North America: SFO, DFW, LAX, YVR, HNL
Africa: JNB
SW Pacific: NAN, AKL, POM
South America: SCL*

*Non one-world partners: DXB (EK), SGN, HKT, KIX (JQ), TPE (CI), SCL (Latam)

I would add SGN and HKT to that list if using Qantas frequent Flyer as Jetstar flies there.
Forgot about HKT, but SGN was there at bottom of list (likewise with EK). Have corrected by adding with *. There are probably others I have missed too.

Thank you all for the very helpful replies. Will try the airports listed but it looks like I can exit the Qatar flight in Melbourne.
