Hi :)

I'm flying to Europe via SIN, and I'd like to buy a bottle of alcohol at the SYD duty free.
Will I get in trouble at SIN when reboarding the plane, or the customs will be ok, since the bottle would have been bought and sealed at a duty free?

Thanks for your answers!

I don't think you can leave it onboard (could be wrong though) in SIN, so I think you would probably lose it when re-boarding the plane. As per the previous post, it may be better to buy it (if whatever you want is available there) at SIN. Probably cheaper as well.

My last trip to Europe via SIN (Sep), all belongings had to be removed from the plane at SIN and rescreened at the gate prior to reboarding.

This is true! My last journey through Singapore was just over a week ago.

Thanks for the replies :)

What I want to buy is a bottle of Bundaberg rum, which from what I've seen in older posts seems to be available at SIN.
However my final destination is not LHR but a regional airport in France, which adds another screening :( (SYD-SIN-LHR-TLS)
So even if I buy my bottle at SIN, it will still probably get confiscated at LHR...

I guess I have no other choice than buying it full fare before I leave!

Edit: Unless I can find a bottle of Bundy at LHR? But I doubt it...!

Do not take in hand luggage. We went through LHR on Thursday & they binned an un-opened bottle of kids panadol.....200ml.

It made it through BNE-SYD-BKK but not LHR.

[-]If you can get to your luggage on arrival at LHR you could pack your bottle of Bundy (purchased in SIN) in them before rechecking for Europe.

If your bags are checked right through then there's no chance.[/-]

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone, it's now clear that I'll have to buy my Bundy at my local store

Can you try the old fashioned duty free purchase system in a city CBD store? Sealed and bonded purchase, then a case of presenting it to the ground side customs desk before putting it in your checked luggage.

You may be in luck; from the LHR FAQs. I read this to mean as long as you purchase in SIN and it is in a tamper-proof bag (which has obviously not been tampered with) then you can take it through when transferring at LHR. But please satisfy yourself that this is so, I don't want to be responsible for any confiscated plonk.:)

"Why was my duty free item confiscated when I transferred though Heathrow?

Under Department for Transport security regulations in place at Heathrow, all connecting passengers are required to clear security prior to boarding their onward flight. Liquids, pastes or gels in containers greater than 100ml, and which have been purchased outside those airports specified by the Department for Transport, cannot be taken through security.

In line with these regulations, we can only accept sealed duty free liquids purchased in the following locations:

Airports within the European Union
Singapore (Changi)
Dubrovnik
Rijeka
Pula
Split
Zadar
Zagreb
On board an aircraft operated by a European Union carrier.

We understand that this can be frustrating for many connecting passengers and we do our best to ensure any problems are avoided by briefing our retail teams and airline partners on this policy. It is disappointing that that not all airports do the same.

Connecting passengers can buy UK tax-free items after clearing security control at Heathrow."

Edit: and here is the link.

Unfortunately it's only for $300+ purchases
Tourist Refund Scheme

I wasn't referring to goods under the TRS but to alcohol which is subject to duty in addition to GST. In the old days this could be purchased sealed up in stores outside the airport. I was wondering if that is still possible since alcohol is still subject to the duty. But I'll have a proper read of your link once I get onto a computer.

Ive had a look now. It says TRS does not apply to:

  • alcohol such as beer and spirits (you can buy wine and wine products under the TRS) and tobacco products (these goods can be purchased from duty-free shops)

But note the bit in brackets. Basically grog is not refunded under the TRS because you have to buy it duty free under a different system. Duty free shops do still exist outside of airports.

I live in Sydney, do you know where I could find such shop?
I've seen duty free shops that sell souvenirs and stuff, but never alcohol :?:

That is hard. I can tell you one in Adelaide ;) Google tells me DFS Galleria in George St, The Rocks. Not sure if it's owned by Nuance. But the grog options don't look good:

DFS Galleria Sydney - Spirits -Liquor

That's all. Sorry, might have to eat my words.

That's ok, at least this thread will be useful to anyone searching for that kind of info ;)

Thanks guys!

If you are not planning on drinking it until you return, leave it with the Duty Free Shop. If you plan on drinking it in Europe, check with the Duty Free Shop, they will know what is best to do.
