Can anyone tell me what the approx chance of an upgrade with points is traveling QF on a premium economy ticket on around the 14th October. Mel-lax to ORD. I am silver FF trying to upgrade to J. Are there any flights that have a better chance than others?

If you haven't got ExpertFlyer have you tried using Flightstats to look at availability. You will need an email address to sign up.

Generally I9 U9 indicate a good chance of having the upgrade to busines class succeed but you would need ExpertFlyer to see U availability as I do not believe the free version shows award availability.

I ended up paying/using points for J as I can't risk falling asleep at my meetings or at work. Annoying system. What the relationship is between U now and U 24 hrs before take-off is the real question. Thanks for the advice though. At least I can look forward to the inflight bar rather than dreading the flight.

Perhaps you should be leaving the day before if you are timing the flight to arrive and then head off to a meeting you must be awake for?

No, it's just a really tight schedule at that time and I am fine with a flat bed and a reasonable stretch of sleep, say 4 hours. If QF would let us check availability while booking as I believe some other airlines do I might be interested. This is where their system falls down. It worked this time for them with my paying for an expensive ticket but I will try Virgin next time I suspect.

Can anyone answer that queston? Somone in yield management may be able to answer that question but they would have most of the information at their fingertips.

Anyway as you have done if that it is that important to sit in business class or first class then do it. Otherwise take your chances in the upgrade lottery.
