A friend of mine was on a Lufthansa flight from Austraia yesterday and they had a lightning strike - I await for him to tell me more!

Whilst these are not everyday occurrences, I think you'll find that this is a lot more common than most people think. :shock:

No you win really. I haven't actually had a strike in a Helo just been really close and that was enough.

Have had one in a fixed wing though and don't want another :!:

Dozens of times I've been in aircraft that have been hit by lightning.

I really love thunder and lightning (I really enjoyed being up on the 38th floor of our building in SIN in the middle of a late afternoon storm) - I am just wondering how much you would actually sense being in the plane and more importantly would they stop the beverage service

Looking at the vid of the incident, you would at least see a huge flash, and I would guess hear a loud crack. that would make me sit up and take notice :shock: . The last thing I would need in this situation would be the beverage service stopped .

Wife and I stayed at a high rise hotel, Clarkes Quay over Xmas and into new year 2 years ago - the late afternoon storms - awesome. I set my camera on a tripod and caught some very cool pics.... I will see if I can find one or two and put them on my blog....

I have been on two planes that have been hit by lightning. One I know for sure, window seat it hit the wing and left a mark. Yes you do know a very bright flash and very loud bang and very shocking ( ) to experience!
Second one loud bang and pilot said over intercom that we were returning as lightning hit somewhere on the fuselage.
I have also had St Elmos fire go through the cabin, down the aisle. That was spooky.

Mrs Tooner & I were on a flight from London to Rome when on final approach we were struck by lightning - I was in a window seat over the wing, and saw the flash, heard the crack etc.

Audible gasps were heard in the cabin, and then the very smooth BA pilot did his best to reassure everyone ("happens from time-to-time...nothing to worry about") which calmed everyone down.

Then he said: "Flight Attendants, if you're still with us, please prepare the cabin for landing". *Cabin pauses, unsure whether to scream or laugh*

I was flying into Chicago during a thunderstorm when I noticed what appeared to be large sheets of white paper streaming past the windows. We were at 4,000ft. I asked on off-duty pilot in the seat across from me what it was. He told they were large geese.

I asked him if they were a problem. He replied in a Southern drawl, "Well, you don't want 'em in the engine." I since discovered that if they had gone into one or both of the turbine we would have been well up the creek without a puddle.

Can you describe that better? St Elmo's fire is a glow on a surface. Was that the effect, or was this a ball of glowing gas that floated down the aisle?

If the latter, then you have my envy. The proper term is 'ball lightning', and I'd have given a (small and very peripheral! ) body part to have seen that, if so.
