I am pursuing 2 noble ideals for a 10 day business trip to Japan, UK, Italy.
1. Carry-on luggage only
2. Maintaining some regular excercise

The challenge is to find some good quality running (actually walking) sports shoes that are both light & compact - the 2 mantras of carry-on travel.

Any ideas ?

Thanks GCD123

Probably not so easy to shrink your feet, so size probably wont change much but i know what you mean... I have taken a liking to columbia shoes recently, rather light. Of course the Nike's etc are the lightest i have seen.

Hmmm, you may wish to check out the Rockport range.

They are designed as walking shoes but can be used in the short term as joggers.

I've done trips with just the one pair of shoes on my feet. If you don't have anything too formal on a brown pair with chinos seems to work fine.

I let them get a little scruffy for casual occasions and then give them a wipe with a tissue for semi-formal / business use.

If you need formal wear / dark suits, which you may for Japan, then black Dressports may be the go. They are wonderfully light weight (although with my size 12 hoofs they aren't very compact). :D

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I think the Rockports would be a good option (provided you don't want to wear a tracksuit at the same time  ) but if you want runners, I have a pair of Asics jogging shoes (not cross trainers) which are very light and the uppers are very flexible so that they will crush almost flat which makes them ideal for carry-on. If you are after a running shoe - look at the pure play jogging shoes as opposed to cross trainers or walking shoes - they are often lighter and with more flexible uppers.

Whilst exercising in Italy a few tips:

Get out early to avoid crowds, pollution and traffic.

If you have to cross the road, try to cross with a nun as the likelihood of being runover is substantially reduced.

Running is better than walking as it is harder to be robbed, shot, or sold some coughpy chinese made souvenir.

Italians view red lights as advice and not an obligation.

Zebra crossings are only used by those with a death wish and Italians are only likely to stop if an actual zebra attempted to cross.

Footpaths are also considered roads by most motorists (well at least those on two wheels which are numerous).

He/she who hesitates will certainly get runover. Back yourself, pray and congratulate yourself that you took out travel insurance before you left.

(My experience is Naples which may not represent the rest of the country.)

Nike "Free's" seem to be very light (the upper is usually really thin). Seem to be cheap in some parts (e.g. USA) too, as I don't think they took off as well as Nike would've hoped.

A podiatrist I know says they're good though...could be worth looking at.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Whichever shoes you choose, consider buying them online from your country of destination and have them shipped to your hotel. or simply buys some there!
