Licence required to consume alcohol on Emirates?

Legal ban or not - the issue seems to be if you are in trouble for any issue, and they suspect you have consumed alcohol at any other time, you may be charged with the consumption of alcohol.

If you do not come to the attention of the authorities for any other matter, drinking by itself, in a designated area such as a hotel, is tolerated/permitted.

We certainly had no issues being offered alcohol on our recent Emirates flight and last night at the IC club the host asked us what we would like to drink and with a large smile stated "The Bar is now open". It was 8pm and Ramadan.

Indeed - but come off the plane holding hands with your girl/boy friend after you've had a drink and not only might you be charged with offensive behaviour, but also for the consumption of alcohol!

Apart from the outrageous issues where rape victims have been charged with adultery, I think that the majority of people are going to be ok. However I am really aware that it's Ramadan and there is just a feeling that you just have to be really well behaved in public.

I'm wearing scarves and long shirts and dresses/slacks even though it's numbingly hot here. Yesterday had a dehydration headache and really wanted to take some nurofen with water and some food. But we were in Dubai Mall and unless I drank out the washbasin in the toilet there was no opportunity. That's the thing that's more impeding than any alcohol issue.

If I have to transit the UAE then so be it but not a place I intend spending any time in. I will avoid the UAE where possible. YMMV.

When travelling in Islamic countries one must remain ever vigilant.

As has been pointed-out, under “normal” circumstances, there is most likely not to be any problems.

However, the unexpected can drop you into a situation with dire results.

One can only hope this poor girl can quickly return to Australia but the experience of being caught-up with the culture and customs of these countries is something no traveller wants.
