I am going to be flying from Chicago to New York in late April, (on AA points as part of a MCO-ORD-(New York)-JFK-LHR 20K reward) and the options I have to fly into are La Guardia (LGA) or Westchester County (HPN). What would you suggest is easiest to get to downtown New York (probably Manhattan) from there? Would probably be looking at some sort of public transport or airport shuttle.

Any advice appreciated.

upon closer inspection, it appears this is an obvious question. LaGuardia is only 9 miles from Manhattan whereas HPN is 30+ miles.

I'd pick LGA every time. There are regular shuttle vans from a few companies, or fixed price cabs. Sadly the subway's not really an option.

There are buses that go to/from the subway fairly quickly, and minimum of fuss. I did this once connecting at Astoria Bvd and minimal walking involved, however shuttle would be easier particularly on arrival.

Yep, go to LGA and take the shuttle bus to Manhattan. Quite an easy and cheapish trip. Then get the subway or a taxi to your hotel. The shuttle stops near Grand Central station from memory.

LGA for sure

Did a flight into there a few weeks ago and got a taxi to Manhatten. Taxis are cheap but it was not in peak hour though

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I have now booked and going to La Guardia.

I will think of you all when I am getting to ORD from Downtown Chicago for a 7.30am departure instead of a more lesiurely 9am departure!!

(actually the train to the airport seems pretty good - and cheap about $2.50 I think - Sydney / Brisbane airports please take note!! For the benefit of those in Melbourne - where I am at the moment - a train to the airport is something most civilised cities have!!)
