I have around 16 hours layover in KUL. I arrive on an overnight flight (6am) so will want to get some sleep. I will also have baggage, its not checked through. Looking for recommendations on nearby hotels with good shopping, preferably with airport transfer. The airport ones are a little confusing as to how to find them after baggage collection. I am assuming most (airside) you do not need to clear immigration. TIA

I assume you're at the main terminal, not the low cost carrier terminal.

If your bags are not checked through, you'll need to enter Malaysia and claim your bags, meaning the airside hotel won't be of use, unless you can check straight back in for your flight that night, which is unlikely.

If you want to do some shopping, the outlet mall isn't too far away and has regular free shuttles to and from the airport. Kuala Lumpur isn't really known as a shopping destination, so that really might be your best bet. But with 16 hours, you might as well take the train downtown. It's about MYR70 (which is more than a rideshare but much quicker) and takes less than 30 minutes.

There is an airport hotel outside the terminal that's run by the same mob looking after the inside one. Its website says it has a free shuttle.

Im coming in on Air Asia and leaving air Asia(wish me luck! ), T2 I believe. Was unsure if id be able to have an airside or would have to clear immigration/customs .

I believe Air Asia use KLIA2 for all flights. (Used to be "Low Cost Carrier Terminal".) There's a landside Aerotel there - 6 Hours from about MYR170 ($AUD60) after discount if you are a member of "smart traveller" which is free to join.

If you do go through immigration, make sure you register for Autogate:

Thanks so much seen this hotel ill take another look thanks

Generally up to 20 minutes, but mainly less as long as they don't run combined Espres-Transit service. Unlikely at 7AM.

Unlikely at 7AM.

But there is their return trip also.

So factor in up to about 40 minutes, round trip, worst case.

And if you have a trolley or large luggage, waiting for a lift can add another 5 or more mins at KLIA1! I've been there often enough.

Still, it all works in the end!

And the busy lifts and the walk (or buggy) to and from to the Sama Sama from KLIA1 landside. Not all that far. But a decent walk.

That said, the Sama Sama hotel, landside at KLIA1, is IMO, a very, very decent airport hotel.

Have stayed there previously and it was fine. KLIA2 has stacks of shops and eateries set over several floors. Mrs Jase managed some clothes shopping there whilst I did some work on the laptop. Short and cheap train ride between terminals

I ended up booking the Tune, which is nearby doesnt look amazingly crash hot but was cheap and cheerful and will do the job for a few hours or so and come with a free meal. Cost 169 myr

I remember even air conditioning and towels are charged separately?

We stayed there a few years ago, no problems, everything was supplied including towels and toiletries. :) Short walk from KLIA2

You can also have day use from 7am to 7pm.
