Hey all

I'm still a bit of a noob to International travel and have my Honeymoon coming up late jan/early feb. I have priced some fares, thinking something along the lines of

SYD-LAX-HNL-SYD

or

SYD-HNL-LAX-SYD

(with maybe a little LAS thrown in there if i can clear it with the other half, we only came back from vegas 6 months ago but i'm itching to go again)

I've spent a bit of time in recent days and some of the airfares are absolutely horrendous. We're getting married 25/1/10 and will probably take off for around 2 weeks. Like $3500-4000 return in Y. I probably expected ~$1500 or so each but i thought maybe i'm just booking it too far out as all the bargains seem to be around a bit closer to the date rather than 7 months out.

What would be an optimal time to start looking for flights?

I'm aiming to add some QF points/Status credits on the trip and i'd LOVE to do SYD-LAX on a 380 (as my office at work overlooks the international terminal and i get to watch them take off all the time)

Any potential strategies on how to handle this?

Thanks

Hmm, for around the $4000 you could look for JQ Star Class SYD-HNL-SYD and AA KUPP/YUPP for HNL-LAX/LAS-HNL and travel at the pointy end of the aircraft. JQ Star Class is available around the time you want to travel for about $2300 return.

The cheapy specials we have seen recently for travel to the USA are not available that far ahead yet. Their availability will depend on how quickly demand grows through any recovery that may result between now and then.

Also note you are looking for travel at the end of the school holiday period, which may affect some pricing and cheap fare availability.

Although you are after some points / sc's and flying the 380, I might even consider taking a JQ flight SYD-HNL, go for a HNL-LAX one way, and then a LAX-SYD return on the 380's (meaning you go back to the USA in mid-late 2010) and start the whole travelling process once again - and prepare for travels in 2011 ;)
